Canopus Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Yesterday I found my membership card for a local video shop. It went missing a few years ago but the video shop has now closed down. I wasn't upset at its demise because I hardly used it in the year or so before the card went missing. There just wasn't enough interesting material on offer after the shop changed from supplying VHS to DVD. I congratulate its management on remaining independent to the end rather than being absorbed into the Blockbuster empire with its mass-market Hollywood tat. Do you still have any video shops where you live? If so, do they stock documentaries about AS and ASD?
Tally Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Our local one shut down a few months ago. I never went in there, but I don't expect they had any documentaries on AS/ASD. They are probably not very popular.
Kathryn Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Our local library isn't too bad for videos and DVD's - they stock a wider range of stuff than the hire shops do. You can keep them for a week as well. K x
pearl Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Havent had one for years round us. Our video recently broke & we had quite a job finding a new one. We have a DVD player but dont really want to replace all our vids. Such is life. Remember cine film? If you want specialist AS DVDs, I'd try the local library. Not that theyll have them but they can maybe get some on inter library loan for you, costs 60p in our district.
KarenT Report post Posted June 8, 2008 We use the library all the time (every week in fact, for movie night and J's Dr Who fix). I think it's about 1.50 for a weekly hire dvd, 2 for newer films to hire overnight. Never seen any ASD documentaries on display but I'd imagine they'd be able to order them if asked, like they do with obscure books. But since you mention it I don't think we do have any hire shops any more - the two we used to have localy are now tattoo shops (now there's a social change for you!). Will have to keep a lookout now. Karen x
Bagpuss Report post Posted June 8, 2008 All ours have shut down, two in the last six months, so now we don't have any in our town. The nearest one is now in another town but it's really too far to pootle for a dvd, and sometimes I do get them from the library, although their range isn't great. I do it all online now Not seen any ASD related ones when our locals shops were open though.
baddad Report post Posted June 8, 2008 I do it all online now Yep, that works for me too! On the plus side - they have obscure stuff stores would be very unlikely to stock (music concerts and things), but on the downside, you never quite know what's coming until they send it (if your list contains fifty items, they'll send 'preffered' titles first if they're not out already, then from further down your list if they are)... That said, the last time I did use one of the stores you had about as much chance of getting a new release as flying - and they charged you extra if you did find it! Just did a quick search of the site I use typing in 'autism' - came up with two titles that looked interesting. If you searched by Director/title etc then you'd probably find many more, as few documentary's etc use the word 'autism' in their titles... I know i got snowcake from here pre-order within days of it's release, and ben's latest futurama movie too!
Flora Report post Posted June 8, 2008 We've got a rental shop in the town near us. It's just dvd's. I don't use it any more though because I kept forgetting to take things back, and the last time I forgot for so long that I could have bought the dvd twice instead of paying the fine!!!! lynyona Report post Posted June 17, 2008 The only place we have for Dvd rental now is our library, there used to be loads of places but theyve all shut down.we even used to rent dvd s at the shop i work but they did away with them as well i think in that instance they were losing more dvds and having to pay loss fees than they we re making on the rentals.
