Pathological Demand Avoidance

Recommended Posts

Ds#2 (5) was diagnosed with PDA today, with a possible diagnosis of ASD to follow.

Anyone got a PDA child? Are they managing in mainstream? It looks like my little one will need a specialist placement but there's nothing out there for PDA.

There is some information on the PDA group site but not much and the forum doesn't seem much used.

It feels like a lonely diagnosis compared to ds#1's dx of AS some years ago

Hiya >:D<<'> >:D<

I know of a couple of families who's children are dx'd with PDA - there is stacks of info out there (but I'd put money on you already googling it >:D<<'> )

As with all kiddies - it's a mixed-bag, i know of two little lads - who are very happy in mainstream, one with a little support, one happy with no extra support. I also know of another lad - who is in a more specialist provision.

Be kind to yourself for a bit >:D<<'>

I can only imagine how you feel, a diagnosis of ASD is hard, but as you say PDA is rarer and there is not as much support.

I know there is a mum that comes on here whose son has PDA. I can't remember her ID/Name though as I last spoke to her on here at Easter.

Do you mind if I ask who diagnosed your DS? Was it the specialist centre? I work at a EBD school and one of the children there is PDA. Because I had heard of it I printed off all the stuff from the PDA contact group as handling her is totally different to how we handle ASD children. I haven't met the child yet as I have been off sick. We are in the south, I don't know about any specific help for PDA, but keep posting about it if you do not get anyone else soon with a PDA child.

Good luck

Clare

Hi

He was diagnosed by our local child and family unit. I didn't think they did formally diagnose PDA as it's been mentioned with ds#1 but never diagnosed formally, but apparently they do.

I don't think our area will fund diagnosis by the specialist centre.

Hi, my eldest son is diagnosed PDA, and I also use the forum. I have posted a link to some new info on the NAS website which gives help and advice and some links. Margo the national coordinator is a great person to talk to, her son also 9 has a son with PDA. My son does attend mainstream at minute, he is statemented though. If you want to chat further please pm me with any specific questions. I can maybe help, or point out some info. on the PDA forum which may help if I have no experience of it. It is a bit of a shock, and PDA is harder to find information about but hopefully this may change.

Regards

Debbie

Hi, I too have a child with a diagnosis independently done of PDA/ASD/ and ADHD. He is going to be getting re-assessed at our local CAMHS though so that may all change but in all honesty his PDA is I think the most prominent.

If you google PDA there is some information for handling the PDA child in the classroom, which is an excellent start for any teacher and parent who is working with a child with PDA, but it's great if one teacher understands PDA even better though if all the teachers working with the child understand it.

The ways of managing a child with PDA are and can be quite different from managing a child with AS and so it's important that all involved with the child understand this.

My child is in a special school for emotional and behavioural difficulties and so again the approaches they use do not always work well for my son and sometimes have quite the opposite effect!!

I find with my son when things are on his terms he can be very well behaved and a pleasure to be around but when he is avoiding something he goes to extremes.

As for help there is help out there, Ask your social services department to do an assessment of your needs and your child's, this can open up to things like respite/help in the home and advice on managing behaviours but I must say it is a real fight to get support as many people do not understand PDA, Have you any local autism out-reach in your area that you could ask if they have any knowledge on PDA?

What kind of special school are you thinking of for your child?
