Kathryn Report post Posted October 17, 2008 After falling out of the school system in her GCSE year and spending 3 years inappropriately placed in an FE college programme mainly for people with moderate learning disabilities, L (19) started a BTec First diploma in IT in September. This was against the advice of her tutors who were sceptical about her ability to cope with the course, and wanted her to do the introductory level first. However she refused to listen and her decision has been vindicated - she has just got a DISTINCTION on her first assignment. She doesn't particularly like the course or her fellow students, but she's finding the work easy, working steadily and sticking at it, and the tutors in the IT department are great - they actually listen to her when she says what her difficulties are, and make adjustments accordingly. So there's still hope and success beyond school, even for those who don't make it through the system. K x

Definitely. Much of the post-school sector is more suitable (although changing to become more school like unfortunately in some respects) and there is (a bit) more maturity (used loosely ) in students.
