TheNeil Report post Posted January 9, 2009 Being the calm and level headed soul that I am, I found last night that I was somewhat stressed after a gruelling day at work (). Driving home though, I had the radio on and just the voice of the news reader calmed me right down. This then got me thinking about voices that calm me down, and voices that stress me out. Doesn't matter what they're saying, it's the effect that they have. So... Calming voices: Cathy Clugston (Radio 4 newsreader and announcer)(or, if you listen to Scott Mills, 'The Posh Lady Off of Radio 4') 'Whispering' Bob Harris (Radio 2 music lover) Barack Obama (soon-to-be most powerful man in the world) Annoying voices: Geoffrey Boycott (Annoying, bigotted cricketer, who can't say 'cricket' properly - it's not 'cri-kit') Jade Goodie (You really need a description? I envy you if you do) Simon Bates (Classic FM eejit who always sounds creepy and makes me feel guilty for copying videos and DVDs...and I don't copy videos or DVDs) Me (Screechy northern brain donor)

pookie170 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I love the mellifluous manly tones of Stephen Fry.... And I rather enjoy the melodic celtic mutterings of Terry Wogan...... My Classical studies teacher also had a wonderful voice for story-telling, I so looked forward to her lessons! But, OMG, would somebody PLEEEEEAAAASSE give Joe Pasquale a Larynxectomy, I cannot stand his annoyingly squeaky tones.......argh,argh!! 'I know a song that'll get on yer nerves, get on yer nerves, get on yer...' OI, PASQUALE! NO!!!! I agree with the Jade Goody consensus too, (my heart goes out to her and I hope she makes a full recovery, bless her), but her voice and general dimwittedness get right up my nose where they are firmly lodged alongside the eyewatering pipings of her fellow 'Big Brother' famous-for-s#d-allite, Chantelle! Amy Winehouse is horrifically nasal and annoying also- strangely, I don't mind her choons!

CEJesson Report post Posted January 10, 2009 (edited) Alan Rickman, Joanna Lumley, Judi Dench and Sally Traffic off Radio 2 both have good voices. James May off Top Gear's voice is amusing probably because it is old fashioned like me. Another one is Ringo Starr, ever since Thomas the Tank engine ! Kathryn Report post Posted January 10, 2009 I love the voices of most of our established actors - they have performed on the stage and know how to use their voices. So - LOVE - Juliet Stevenson Jonathan Pryce Alan Rickman, Ian Mc Kellen Harriet Walter Judi Dench Emma Thompson Alex Jennings Rowan Atkinson Stephen Fry Joanna Lumley Tamsin Greig Richard Burton (are we allowed dead people?) Scottish accents HATE - Janet Street Porter Alan Sugar Graham Norton Keira Knightley Sandi Toksvig Extreme South African accents I'm sure there are many more but I can't think of them right now!
