things are finally moving!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

As some of you may know, i've been battling the the "Authorities" for about a year now, trying to get Kai moved out of his EBD school and into a specialist AS school. After a big fight, I won and Kai is now due to visit the school I have identified on Thursday :thumbs::thumbs: .

Two members of staff from the new school came to visit him at school last week and they thought he would fit in perfectly at their school. They even said they wanted to "rescue" him from his EBD school and take him back with them  .

He has really been suffering there lately. Although the teachers are lovely, the care staff are very "boot camp" and not at all understanding of his AS. It's made him so anxious and his tics have been much more pronounced. He picks up on alot of "undesirable" behaviour from some of the other boys.

I really hope he likes it at the AS school and will agree to go. It's such a fantastic school.

If it all goes well on Thursday, he should be able to start in the next few weeks. The timimg is terrible as my new baby will be here in 3 weeks, but i'm sure we'll manage somehow!!!!!

Hi Lou Lou what a reliefe for you,

I hope I can talk for many here that have been with you through this can now breath a sigh of reliefe for you and Kai as I am sure once he is in an enviroement that actually meets his needs you will see instant improvement just like it has for Jay.

I cant believe the timing for the due date of your baby is in three weeks which is the same time Kai is due to go to residential AS school.

Hopefully it will all go smoothly, you could do with a bit of luck on your side.

The staff who said they wanted to take him there and then, It must of been really hard for them to leave him at the EBD school knowing he wasnt getting the right kind of help, what a tuff Job the AS Special school staff have witnessing children getting the wrong management.

I really do hope you and Kai get to spend some quality time together as a family soon in the holidays and weekends if he goes home, just like me and Jay do now he is in the right place and he is now really coming on.

Your amazing mum whos been throw more than there fair share, I totally admire your fighting spirit.

well done lou and you know where here if you need help getting throw the resi bit.

Im sure once he is in the right place he will bloom.

Good luck Lou Lou.

Good Luck Kai,

Hi everyone,

Can I just ask, are there many schools around specially for children with AS. This is all new to me, but I have read a few things about these schools. I am not aware of anything like this in my area but for those that do have children go to the school for thier needs all seem happy with the progress their kids are making. How do you find where there are any?

As I said I am new to this, just getting diagnosis for my son who is 13 but you seem to have to fight for everything and really look around for info. I think I have learnt more on here this past few days than I have this past year.

Hi Joanne

It took a long time to get J into a specialist school, he went throw the SEN system from early Year action at three to Early Years Action plus, then school action when he went to reception, to school action plus in year 1, and sadly stayed on School Action plus for a further three years, he struggled with everything socially, learning, behavourally, emotionally and mentally, by year 5 he got a statement after I requested an assessment of Special Educational needs which orignally was turned down, but after J became very anxious to need time out he got a statement where he got alocated 1-1 support.

It worked well for a very short period until Jay struggled again, and went to part time to try and intergrate him but by the end of year 6 he was disengaged, highly stressed in a mainstream setting and we went to a tribunal at the end of last year and requested a special school placement.

We had real difficulties finding a special school locally, J has average to high intelligence but cant apply this to real life situations, a special school locally catered for children who where severely/moderately intellectually impaired and so J wouldnt of got his needs met in the local special schools that is when we started to look at spersific ASD/ADHD Dyslexia ECT.... Special Schools for children with Average Intelligence with provisions and services for the impairments they struggle with in everyday life.

Jay also desprately needed the 24hr curriculum to give him structure and rules otherwise he would of simply refused to attend school, even a specialist school, he has a lot of severe behavioural difficulties too and really needed the consistancy of a residential school, you need a lot of evidence to prove this too, however if there is a specialist A.S school near you then they can attend day time for us there was none locally and so we had to apply out of county.

It was highly stressful and totally draining, but i knew if I didnt fight J would suffer long term, into adolescence and so I got lots of support from the forum here, Nas, Contact a family, and Network 81 just a week before the tibunal the LEA decided to give J the funding to go to the specialist school, it costs a lot of money which is why a lot of parents have to have an overdose of evidence, and bags of fight in them and defo support even if its telephone support, email ect..

J was lucky and it makes me terribly sad knowing there is other children out there getting let down in name of funding.

Depending where you are in the special needs banding it does take time, and sadly a lot of suffering not by just our children but our families and friends.

You can request a list of specialist schools from your council who will provide a booklet of every independant, non maintained, private, special school in the UK.

I recieved this when J was going throw the Staementing process.

Residential special schooling has great opportunities to acccessing therapies and provisions otherwise wouldnt be available but it is emensly difficult too as I have found out and what you think is the end of a fight and a battle, starting residential special school for me in fact is like starting all over again, but guess what, I dont regret it, and I have grown up a lot too as I have respite and the time to put in energy for me, which sounds selfish but Js getting his needs met and now its time to water our roots and grow together in different paths.

National Autistic Society have a website on all specialist school throw the directory.

So do look throw there, Contact a family also have further information on Special schools.

IBIS is another website and googling is just as effective too.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update:

Kai is on his way home from the school visit now. My Dad took him as i'm 8 months pregnant and my toddler is poorly :( .

He just phoned me and said he liked the school and made a friend  . He EVEN liked the teachers AND the lunch!!!!! Amazing!

I have to wait now for the school to officially offer a place. I'm sure they will as the school is perfect for Kai.

I'm sooooooooooooo proud of my boy :wub:>:D<<'> :notworthy:
