DLA or Blue Badge anyone?

Recommended Posts

Can I just ask if there are many people out there who have kids diagnosed with Autism (moderate-severe, non verbal, low muscle tone) who are getting DLA for them and at what rate?

Also do any of you qualify for a blue badge either by getting the higher rate of mobility or having an understanding council?

I have applied for both and been turned down. I appreciate every case is unique but have heard of people getting these things for autism and just wondered if I was being unfair in applying to receive them when i am fully aware there are other children out there who obviosuly need them.

Thanks

Hi, National Autistic Society have a welfare rights service now and can email you to help support you throw the process, DLA is not directly given for DX as it goes by NEED, and what support your child needs, even if they are NOT RECIEVING the support they need.

Contact a Family have outreach workers also and they will come down and help you with the forms and go throw a booklet all about DLA, even if the outreach workers are not in your area the helpline will send you a booklet and information on it.

DLA mobility is difficult to pass for Autistic children for the High rate, so you may need expert support, via the NAS website and CAF, so please do research what support you can get.

If you disagree with the decision you can also appeal and attend a oral hearing or a paper hearing, and put forward your childs needs, then they decide there.

There is a few past posts on the forum about blue badge so do look out for previous posts, if you get high rate mobility you just send the proof in (photocopy) if you get low rate mobility you can write to them and request one and put down the reasons why you need one for your son, some people have got it with high rate care, low rate mobility.

found this one that may offer further advise.

I cant recommend the NAS and CAF enough and remember not only is the DLA a benefit to help with her needs, it is a legal document that tells the councils and authority she has a disability and has rights, so its much more than just the financial benefit, its giving her a right to help all her needs been met.

Good Luck.xxx

that dont really seem fair. i get the middle rate for personal care and low rate for mobility. i was told that the higher rate is to do with physical disability that cant get around and stuff like that.

Hi,

My daughter has just been awarded High Rate Care and Low Rate Mobility. She is not even diagnosed yet but is on the Autistic Spectrum. Also, my council have just given Lib home to school transport in a taxi due to her walking trouble and mobility problems. If I were you I would talk to someone at NAS to see if they can help you. In my area we have something called the Parent Partnership for people who have children with special needs. They are like an advocacy group that help people get the things that they need. You are absolutely not being unfair. Your child most likely needs extra care and you should be entitled to get this help. I would appeal the decisions and get some help. -Skye

Hi there

When we first claimed DLA for N (about 4 years ago now) we had al ovely lady from SS who helped us with the forms. At that time Ns mobility was quite poor (she could only walk short distances, had trouble with steps and kerbs and couldn't run), plus she had no sense of danger and was wetting the bed about 4 times a week. She also suggested we claim for a Blue Badge. Much to my delight N was awarded DLA at High Rate for both Mobility and Care and we got the Blue Badge.

When we reclaimed she was only awarded Lower Rate Mobility but Higher Rate Care - when I questioned this I was informed that to get High Rate Mobility the person in question must not be able to easily walk 100 metres on flat, even ground (N can do this but still struggles with uneven ground, stairs etc).

A tip that SS gave me was to fill in the form based on your child on their worst days - I know this isn't easy to do as you are writing loads of negatives about your child, but it does work.

If your child needs significantly greater care and supervision than a regular child of the same age, then it is completely fair to apply for DLA.

I got DLA for my son when he was 6, with an initial dx of dyspraxia (middle rate care, low rate mobility). This was increased to high rate care for a while when he was a bit older as we had problems at night. Returned to middle rate care when the problems stopped. At one time his SW recommended I apply for high rate mobility as he was a runner, but I felt happy in myself that low rate was more appropriate for him.

He had DLA until he was 18, when we both felt he no longer qualified for it as he was by then able to work, use public transport, etc.

Good luck >:D<<'>

Hi

Thanks for your help and suggestions. Sorry I didnt make it very clear both my girls (Twins) do get middle rate DLA but I was applying for mobility too, in the hope i would get at least low rate, and hopefully get a blue badge. Although they can walk, they are very unpredictable and dangerous, go in different directions (or not at all) and have no road sense whatsoever. I thought i had worded the application well and explained everything but obviosuly didnt use the words they were looking for. I even had them look at it again but they just said all 5 year olds have to hold their parents hand around busy roads! Maybe they should try going out and about with both my girls and a baby on your own at the same time! But I know they look at children individually and dont take into account the fact I have 2 special needs children, a baby and only 2 hands!!!!

I will contact NAS and Contact a family thanks but dont think i can face going to appeal again as I know what it entails having just finished one for both their statements (Which we won but still hasn't been implimented by LA but thats another story!)

You get sick of fighting for everything and it wears you down!

For children with no obvious mobility problems the higher rate mobility component is connected to getting the higher rate care component. More here.

We get higher mobility and highest care rates.

There is some revision of Blue Badge criteria going on right now. Should be out soon.

Hi.I discovered on the NAS help course last Tuesday that the NAS now have a dedicated benefits adviser.

The link to the web site is http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp...150&a=16490

It is worth obtaining some specialist advice when competing the forms for DLA.We obtained lower rate moblity and middle rate care for Ben last week after a request for a review of the case.Karen.

Hi.I think you may need to obtain higher rate mobility in order to qualify for a blue badge however I am not sure whether all councils operate according to the same criteria. Karen.

I don't know the rate, but both my children are on DLA. They are at the less severe end of Autism (HFA), and are verbal but developed that later than usual. We don't have blue badge because neither my wife nor I are drivers... but both have free bus passes with plus ones.

I do not think you were being unfair in your application. I think you should apply again or contest the refusal, and also talk to your support professionals about this also. Also the CAB (Citizens Advice Bureau) is very good for helping with the filling in of forms, if the Support Pros are not available. Don't take the refusal of DLA lying down.
