Adult ASD in Northamptonshire

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I was not sure whether to post this in this forum or in the "Help and Advice" forum, or even elsewhere so please forgive me.

Having recently received my final, official diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome, one of the first things that I was asked following my diagnosis was "do you have any questions?"

The first thing that I wanted to know was whether there were any social or support groups (or any other descriptive term you would care to use) for Adults with ASD's in Northamptonshire. His answer was, unfortunately, "Not that I am aware of."

He also stated that it was a question he was asked by nearly every adult he diagnosed with an ASD in this county.

In light of this, I have created a new group on Facebook titled "Adult ASD in Northamptonshire". I want to provide a space where like-minded adults can meet, socialise and make friends without the difficulties which can often present themselves when we are surrounded by NTs. This group will be, initially, to give us the opportunity to meet each other and feel accepted in a non-judgmental environment. Once I have sufficient members (currently I am setting a threshold of 6-7 minimum), I will attempt to locate a suitable meeting venue (through discussions with members) to ensure that we are able to share our experiences, thoughts and ideas in the most comfortable way possible. If the group is successful, I would like eventually to perhaps look at obtaining guest speakers or organising other events.

My Facebook username is Dale Christopher Morgan, if that helps people to locate the group.

I have also started to look into the notable lack of support for Adults on the Autistic Spectrum in the UK, and I would like this to be one of the first topics of discussion within the group. It is my experience, and the experience of others that I have met on the spectrum, that the government could do a lot more to improve our access to appropriate services and support, as well as raise awareness. I have been in contact this evening with one high-profile name that I hope may be able to give me advice on this matter but, of course, I do not want to discuss anything in case this "avenue leads to nowhere" (I tend to put metaphors, similes or analogies in quotes for easy recognition).

Please feel free to give your thoughts on the matter. Anyone is free to join this group on Facebook, or attend any meetings that take place.

Thank you,

Dale.

i'm 19 year old female i live in northamptonshire i have AS,dyspraxia and MH probs and think this is brilliant idea that government should support fully to help publicise awareness and also campaign for more help available through things such as support groups it would open my world up more if had support there it think fab idea worth looking into more and hope the council back plans for it! i behind it all the way about time there was something in place for us kind of people we don't seem to 'fit' or belong anywhere MH or social services really! so about time they realise time to step up and make a positive difference and change gives us freedom ,independance! etc i'd be grateful if did go ahead i'd be interested alot!i havn't met many people like myself and would love share my personal experiences and stories share them around to help others out!

Good evening Smiley, please join the group on Facebook if you are a member on that site. The more that join, the sooner I can start to organise something where we can all get to know each other and feel a part of something!

FACT northants do great work as my scholol mate mums was running it but aimed towards parents rather than sufferers than themselves!i'm not downgrading all work FACT does but we need something support wise as sufferer to call our own as im too old to go to youth clubs run by NAS seems like serivces have run out or not been set up! that why i'm agreeing and backing this new idea as fresh and could helps lots of adults like myself that miss out on help because we not kid or fit into anywhere else that around and about! that is annoying and frustrating part and northamptonshire supposed to have better improved services for clients living here!XKLX
