ADOS report says no ASD

Recommended Posts

So does that mean that I'm just a terrible blooming parent?

I don't know where I go from here, he has obvious difficulties which are mentioned in the report and his behaviour is ###### horrible but there's nothing wrong with him?

Hi kelly :)

No, it doesn't mean you're a blooming terrible parent at all, it just means the cause and effect variables aren't the ones you previously thought.

The 'non' diagnosis is every bit as helpful as an affirmative diagnosis, because it enables you to look more accurately at what those cause and effect variables might be and respond accordingly. That may mean a re-think about some of the strategies you use as a parent, but that would have probably been the case even if the diagnosis had been ASD. And it doesn't imply 'bad parenting' in any way - just confusion, which is something all parents can identify with.

Hope that's helpful

Hi

An ADOS isn't the be all and end all. It's only part of the whole diagnostic process. If your child is anything like my son, he is incredibly inconsistent/unpredictable. He can be 'normal' on a good day, but by on a bad day, it becomes obvious that he has issues. Other investigations should be made - discussions with the school, CAMHS perhaps, reports from other professionals eg OT, SALT, etc.

Caroline.

The consultant paed is going to be sending me out another appointment for just me to go in and discuss the report after discussing things with the school.

Its not like i'm disappointed there's no ASD, just confused. It was 2 school paeds that pushed him through for assessment after believing there was something wrong. ADHD was mentioned at the first appointment with the consultant paed so maybe its that?

Whatever it is, there's something just not 'clicking' with him (well lots of somethings according to the report!)

Sorry to hear that the assessment has thrown you deeper into confusion, Kelly. Obviously you want clear guidance now as to what exactly is going on and how your son can be helped, especialy in school. I hope the appointment clarifies things.

Do you feel he does have ASD? what are his main difficulties, behavioural, emotional, mental health, social, communication, language, imagination ect.... where is it he is struggling the most, look deeper into these, there could be underlying reasons, like my son he has co morbids and multi dx which impeed other conditions.

Do you feel they have done a thora assessment, done the observations, you could request a second oppinion and request another more specialised or specific hospital assess him, sometimes with complex needs children everything overlaps.

All I do know that is that many children in our area are been dx as EBD or distructive disorders and put into inapropriate educationa placements, when later down the line they are dx as having most common AS/ADHD/Dyslexia and OCD.

If you are unsure of the next direction and feel there may well be undx ASD then you can get more advice from NAS.

Good Luck to the future.

DO NOT GIVE UP!That is important as parents we all know our kids better than others. At least they have said you can go for a second appointment on your own ,go well prepared, try making a diary of his behaviour between now and then not just the bad days but the good ones to as there may be a reason why he is good on those days ie.no changes in routine my make him happier and relaxed. At least if they sure its not AS try and see if they can help in other ways maybe he needs to talk to someone about his feelings and feels he cant talk to you,you will get to the bottom of the problem eventually.Good luck.

It doesn't mean there's nothing wrong, and I'm sure it's not your parenting - ADHD might make sense.

I would say though that if his ADOS came back as no ASD stuff, it's probably right. The point about autism is that it's pervasive - they're not just autistic some days and not others, and the ADOS is designed to spot very subtle signs. Yes, we know our kids better than anyone, but the psychs are the experts in autism. That's just my view.

I hope you get some answers soon.

i know how frustrating it can be >:D<<'> >:D<<'>

My first son was diagnosed autistic via an ADOS, his twin sister was later diagnosed on the spectrum after an ADOS but only once a specialist in girls with asd watched the video of the assessment... however my second son is also strongly suspected as being on the spectrum by ed psych and behavioural advisor but only scored 1 on the ados even though they commented on several other behaviours he had that were common with asd... but the ados doesnt score them

we are now at the point where he has a statement and has just started school so hopefully we can work out whats going on, but it is frustrating seeing the behaviours and knowing that he is on the spectrum somewhere but being told he doesnt score high enough.

i have repeatedly been told that the ADOS is not the only way to diagnose and that it doesnt always get it right, so hold on to some hope that they will get things sorted for your son xxxx

I'm not actually convinced that he has an ASD but there is 'something'.

I've done some reading on ADHD and to be honest that seems to fit him more than an ASD in that he can't control him impulsivness, can't settle to anything, doesn't like writing and lots and lots of other things, particularly his violence and agression.

Hopefully my appointment to see her will come soon so I have a clearer idea but for now i'll just carry on as we have been and hope we get somewhere.

Thank you all for fantastic advice x

hi still new to all this ,waiting for diagnosis for 13 year old dd,but just to let you know we see clinical phycologist on a regular basis and it was her that first came up with aspergers ,however she did say even without diagnosis, doesnt change anything dd is how she is and we have to deal with it regardless of dx.so looks like even without dx you still can see there is a problem so dont be fobbed off ,trust youself and just keep pushing wether they have a 'label' or not.hope you get things sorted.
