The most amazing month of his life ...

Recommended Posts

First, he got his black belt :star:

Then he got his job

Now ... he's only gone & bought a flat :hypno:

He's been saving virtually every penny he's earned over the last 2 years for a deposit. He'd intended to start looking in the New Year, but I couldn't resist having a peek at Rightmove ...

Its a bijou one-bedroom residence in a really nice area - amazingly, directly opposite the house mr p grew up in! About 5 minutes drive from us & walking distance to supermarket, work etc. The vendor is leaving all the furniture (it was a buy-to-let) so a good clean & he's up & running. His offer has been accepted so, although it may yet fall through, thats one major hurdle over with.

Lest you are all worrying this is way too fast - so am I. But it was a rare opportunity, so Carpe Diem. Most places he could afford were in dodgy areas which just wouldn't do (I'd never sleep again!) But we intend the actual moving in & living independently to happen very slowly, one step at a time.

What a year its been. I keep pinching myself.

And you get to start planning your Tony Robinson/Jaffa cake shrine/safe in JP's old room :ph34r:

Again, marvellous news. It sounds like it's all falling into place for him, and deservedly so!

Ooh, housewarming party!...(Hah, if it was my Cal, the party would consist of bowls of cheesy pasta, tomatoey pasta, froot loops  and doritos for nibbles, Pink on the stereo and non-stop gaming!! Argh!)

Sounds ace, think he'll be a right houseproud homeowner?

Great news, hope all goes well- get ready to dig out the Dulux and paint rollers, Pearl!

I'm really pleased for your son and for your family. I hope everything goes like clockwork for him. He has a supportive family, who he can fall back on, and he couldn't ask for more.

Brilliant, well done, wow abaloutly amazing and totally inspiring and gives us parents some hope for the future of some of our children, he certainly is on a role.

Independance is the ultimate, I love my own home, we are very happy, living in a more desirable area sure does add to the security too, so understand the reliefe you have in finding a nice area, we are so happy were we live.

It will be very strange though that first night in 20 10 when he is in his own bed in his own flat, so be ready for it yourself!!!!!!!

Wow, amazing news!

At a time when house prices are not rising very quickly, it is in the vendor's interests to hold on to a buyer, even if there are minor problems and delays. With a secure job, JP is in an excellent position.

And the furniture thrown in for free as well, that will save him a fortune! It's fairly easy these days to pick up any extra bits and pieces quite cheaply. Supermarkets often have a good selection of homewares, and some of them sell larger electrical items online as well.

It will be nice to have him so close by. Convenient for him to bring you his washing

Tally, do you know J knows how to use our washing machine, he even gets upset if he cant do it, yet he cant put his laundry in his bedroom in the basket?????

Washermachines are in some fantastic sales out there, if there is the right time to buy a washermachine, its now, the prices are crazy, I bet when mine breaks The sales will be over!

Ah, you know me so well ...

Thanks for the good wishes everyone. We've just returned from another viewing. Met the upstairs neighbours (a lovely middle aged couple who were really helpful) & took lots of photos. There's a resident's committe & everything! Its been taken off the market now & all other viewings cancelled.

Its been an amazing couple of years really, but this last few months .... I'm so not used to things going smoothly - keep waiting for the 10 ton weight to fall. Really glad its an encouragement to you all as well - we've had our share of traumas as you know, but its nice to post the good stuff too without being thought show-offy. It could all still go belly up after all, but hopefully not

Watch this space for further exciting developments

Trust me Mum of 3, it goes really fast.

Why, it seems only yesterday that he was locking the headteacher in his office, and posting peas down the cracks of the floorboards in the school hall ....

Wow, things are really moving quickly now!

Great news that he loves his new job. Even when I love the job, I always find starting something new really stressful.

Thanks Dana

Its worked out well, Tally - he's gone back to Legal where he started his apprenticeship 2 years ago - so he knows the work, & knows the people. It suits him better than Housing too - busy & buzzy, he's never bored.

Another weird coincidence - one of his colleagues lives 2 doors down! He cycles to work & has given JP advice on the best route.

He applied for his mortgage this morning - its going to work out cheaper than renting

Does anyone know if AS should be declared? It didn't arise on the health questionnaire, but the broker used his DLA letter as proof of address & I've been wondering if they would query it.

Tricky one. I don't know how he's organising all the 'bits' (mortgage, payment protection, house/building insurance etc because when I did mine it was under a special scheme to help first-time/disadvantaged buyers and they basically did it as an all in one thing (it was fantastic, not like many similar scam schemes, I just wish there were more similar schemes)) - I would personally say that you do need to declare AS for anything that might result in him needing to claim on any scheme/policy because you can guarantee that they'll find it out and use it against him :( if he doesn't and find a way of saying that to not do so invalidates his policy/agreement.

Of course, if you do declare, you may find he is exposed to higher premiums (:shame:) - probably not allowed, but doesn't mean they wouldn't.

You could claim ignorance (especially as it didn't come up on the health questionnaire) but I don't think that would hold up should things go wrong. What does he do with other things - DVLA, car insurance etc? Maybe just ensure consistency?

Sorry, I don't think that helps, it's one of the issues I find difficult because it seems so unfair and I worry about being penalised, yet until we do feel ok about declaring and insurers etc see that we aren't an extra risk and so don't raise premiums, things aren't going to change.

I can't see how it's relevant to his mortgage application or buildings/contents insurance.

It MAY be necessary to declare if he is taking out some kind of payment protection policy where they would pay out if he were to be too ill to work - they generally ask about health conditions for which you are currently (or recently) undergoing treatment from a specialist. I think they would not see this as relevant since it's not likely to result in a need to claim.

Thanks both.

I have to take some stuff in to the broker on monday so I've got JP's permission to disclose on a need-to-know basis. I'm hoping he might suggest using some other form of proof of address then hopefully there will be no queries. We've never declared it to the DVLA as we didn't know he needed to & it hasn't been a problem as far as driving is concerned.

Now, back to the really important stuff - cushions & throws

I *think* you/he is legally required to declare it, even though it isn't a problem. Not fair I know, but life ain't fair. As far as I'm aware though, if they conclude it isn't a problem, it's just recorded that you've told them and life continues as normal. But don't quote me on that. Insurance may be a different issue altogether.

You forgot the candles

I'm guessing ignorance is no defence, but the whole time JP was learning to drive no-one told him or us. We only found out recently. Seems a bit daft now he's been driving 2 years & is much safer than many a boy racer. Ah well, we'll have to have a hard think about that one.

You forgot the candles

Nooooo, no fire hazards in JP's pad! Far too girly for him, anyway

Hi pearl

Glad things are progressing well.

Shame about these little niggles to do with AS. Perhaps the NAS can advise on legal situation? I hadn't even thought about this aspect, my eldest will be 17 next year and it would not have occurred to me that we needed to let DVLA know (and hopefully we won't have to).

I went back to mortgage guy & asked him to photocopy something other than the DLA letter - no problem. And the homebuyer's report has arrived with a clean bill of health  He is hoping to complete before Christmas :o

this is great news!!!

Its pretty amazing for a 20 year old to be buying his first house especially in these times!!!

Shows what he can achieve despite his difficulties!!!

I wouldnt worry too much about the DVLA. They would have to have a pretty good reason to take his license. In most cases they allow you to continue to drive while the DVLA carries out its medical investigations. Aspergers is not in itself a bar to driving, its more about his specific behaviour and as youve said, hes far more responsible than your average 20 year old driver.

Well so much for completing before Christmas

Its been absolutely epic. I have morphed into Kirstie Allsop these last 3 months. We have had:

4 surveys

2 different mortgages

2 ###### useless solicitors

Considering this transaction was chain-free both ends, & we & the vendor have been absolutely straightforward with each other - its amazing how the 'professionals' can drag things out.

But at last, the end is in sight. He signs the draft contract on Monday & should complete by the end of the month, give or take a week or so. Its actually been quite good having the delays - its given him chance to keep on saving, & given us time to get our heads round this big change & adjust to it. But we are more than ready to move on now.

Trip to IKEA next, I think

Good luck to your son, moving away from home is a huge step. My Dd1 moved out last year and is doing fairly well, she still has disasters but they are getting less frequent. The best part is that our relationship has improved sooo much. Again good luck. B)

Thankyou. Yes, our daughter moved out a few years back & we get on so much better now!

JP & I went to the building society this morning to get the banker's draft for his stonking deposit. They all know him there & have some inkling of how far he has come, so it was a real celebratory atmosphere, & I had a lump in my throat watching him sign for it. I'll be in bits at the solicitor's on Monday!

HE GOT THE KEYS TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!:balloon::band::cheers::groupwave::notworthy::party::partytime::wine::bounce::clap::first:

I've never seen him so happy & excited. We went straight round there & jumped up & down for a bit, then made a big list & went shopping (watch & learn, son ... )

We are all going there tomorrow to start cleaning, & S & her boyfriend are coming over too. I've got the week off work next week to wait in for locksmiths etc. Hopefully he'll be up & running by April.

Happy, happy day .... so proud of my lad
