Home tutor provided by education authority.

Recommended Posts

My son is currently in a specialist unit for ill and sick children. It is run by educational medical services, and he has been there for this past 8 week term. He has had to go there as he is suffering from severe stress, caused by school not understanding his ASD, or meeting his needs correctly. Sound familiar?!! We are not getting on with the head or SENCO at all, at the moment. We don't want him to go back into school, as he will be picked on even more. The centre is ok, but they only do 2 lessons a day, and he will start to get behind. Has anyone gone down the route of asking for a home tutor to be provided by the education authority? I could home educate, but am suffering from ill health myself, and also he is in his last year, and taking GCSE's. He is on target to do well in his exams, and he wants to work hard towards them and get good results. I have posted another message on her under having problems with Head, that explains things in more detail. I hope someone can help.

I'm pretty sure that the LA will only supply a home tutor when a child is formally signed off as unfit for school on medical grounds.

This happened to my son who was out of school for 6 months. He did have a home tutor, but only for 4 hours a week. He only studied two subjects during this time.

I'm not sure that you would get a home tutor in the circumstances you describe, and I think your son would probably get even further behind if you were successful.

My LEA wouldnt even contemplate either a unit or home tutoring even though he was signed off with a gp letter, he went back to school part time even with that in place he did a months worth of education in a year, the LEA have a duty of providing education after 15 days off school with medical reasons then they have to give you either a unit or home tutor.

In our area this is five hours a week, but Ive read litriture that children should access a full time table.

Have you looked into independant specialist schools?

My son started a special school in year 7, he is doing much better now.

Hi Poll

Here's the govt. guidance on educating pupils with medical needs: you might find some of it useful as it sets out what a LA's responsibilities are generally, and it mentions older pupils in exam years.

http://publications.dcsf.gov.uk/eOrderingD...S-0732-2001.pdf

Also look at your own LA's policy on this (it should be on their website, or ask them to send it to you), it, if not, make a complaint.

I seem to remember that pupils in GCSE years are entitled to 21-25 hrs tuition, but I don't know where I saw this: maybe someone else can help.

Hi, Its Called EOTAS Educating other that at school. You are entitled to tutoring for your child by the LEA provided by them for a number of hours a week. They have to be registered with a school but do not have to be attending. It is so the tutors can get the work and lesson plans for your kid so they keep up. Your kid should meet the criteria if they are not home educated. The Lea do not want people to know about EOTAS because it is expensive for them. CAHMs can do a referral on Emotional grounds to access this. Also the school could have done it for you, but are closing ranks. The kid needs to not have been in education for at least 14 days full time. If you are serious about home educating think long and hard, home educating it is a really big thing to take on. I saw it as my only option when my kid had a mental and physical breakdown due to the lack of recognition and support for my 12 year old with AS Dyspraxia and Dyslexia. Once you de register your kid it is your responsibility and not the Lea, they will not give you help or funding for anything.

Good luck any other help give me a shout you are not alone

The above link gives the amount of hours tutoring a child that is excluded should receive. This input is alot higher than 5 hours a week. Maybe the hours are lower for children who are not in school due to medical reasons. But as this was found on the IPSEA website, it might be worth phoning them and asking them WHY the difference in hours and is there any way of getting additional tutoring for your child as he has his GCSEs this year.
