fieldmouse Report post Posted June 8, 2010 My social worker said she sees other autistic adults but there is nothing in the Bournemouth are like groups/day centers that could help me in the daytime with some things to do. She said I should try starting up a group which could grow into something [everything has to start somewhere]. I wanted to ask other members [as they are in lots of different areas] if the resources are bad where you live?

trekster Report post Posted June 8, 2010 In my area we have 3 social groups, a cinema group (one for adults one for kids) and also another social group in another town. i have to travel to Bristol as there is little that's accessible in north Somerset. We've got the lynx resource centre but it's nowhere near the railway station or a regular bus route to the railway station. Theres also an inaccessible autism social group run by uni students in bristol. Im the social secretary for my area (Bristol and Bath)
Tally Report post Posted June 8, 2010 There is pretty much nothing where I live in Surrey for adults with ASD. The best thing I have found is a social group for people with learning disabilities. The other people are far more disabled than me, most are living in residential care. A couple hold down VERY part time employment or highly supported voluntary work. I am the only one who lives independently or drives a car. I don't really feel I fit in very well, but it's the best match I can find at the moment. The other thing I am looking into is joining a group centred around one of my interests, rather than a disability-related group, although I have not had any luck yet. Something like that, a course or voluntary work may be another way to fill your day. I'd think carefully before starting your own group. I don't want to put you off, it would be a fantastic thing to do. But maybe you could talk to people who run similar groups so you have a good idea what might be required before you commit to anything.
Gordie Report post Posted June 8, 2010 I go to a once-a-month evening social group for people with Asperger's, at a pub in my home town of Yeovil. It's been going for quite a few years now, run by the NAS, with other neurotypical volunteers who help out. It's always well attended, taking up a good 2 or 3 tables each time. Not sure about daytime activities around here, as they're not the sort of things I would typically indulge in. James
