Behavioural and emotional schools?

Recommended Posts

Ds2 is 6 and currently in an asd unit. His diagnosis is PDA and a-typical autism.

Yesterday his teacher wanted a word to say that things are not going well at all - he's been sent home twice this week and on a separate day has badly bruised another child - she asked us to think about a specific special school with caters for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. I'm so shocked that things are so bad that even with fulltime one to one and an autism unit, that they're not coping. He is exceptionally difficult!

Has anyone any experience of behavioural schools? My instinct says no but he's so different from his older brother who has asd and is doing well in the unit. With ds2, the PDA is the prominent problem.

Hi, My son has behavioural and emotional needs but a EBD school would not of been the right envirement for him, he also he Autism needs and so a EBD school would not meet these needs, our local EBD school stipulates it does not meet the needs of those with AS/Autism, My son goes to a school where both ASD and EBD needs are met, sadly his school dont except boys until secondary age, there is a school in shropshire where they cater from 8 and they tend to be residential as the boys require a 24hour curriculum due to the complex behaviours.

I would say a stand alone EBD school would not meet ALL your sons needs.

It maybe that he needs a specialist Autism school rather than a unit, and it maybe that your son may benefit from a residential type school to give him a consistant enviroment and reduce changes for him however he is maybe too young at the moment for residential specialist schools.

From the research Ive read on PDA children with this condition need very specialist management that a EBD school could make his condition worse, so I would look at a specialist school that also cater for PDA and Autism.

Some EBD schools do do well with children with ASD, but lots do not. You could always go and look at the school, to see what you think, but also go and see a few ASD specialist schools, so you have something to compare them with.
