cafe meet-ups in your area

Recommended Posts

Hi. Recently I joined an online networking site designed for like-minded people to meet locally. It is very easy to set up a group of your own in your own location. People set up groups to meet other people on any subject. I'm thinking of starting a group for people with AS. Just meeting in cafes for coffee and chat. It feels to me like a fantastic idea. Do you think I should do it?

i think with careful preparation and planning it should work. There is currently one in Bristol that works well. People arrive when they like then socialise during the meeting then leave when they like. It is held in a cafe that has been negotiated so we can have upstairs if necessary so our own autistic space.

Having a meet function is important, for both people directly and indirectly affected by AS. From my perspective, as someone with AS, its important to me to reap social and therapeutical benefits from systems around.

The great thing potentially with a coffee meet, is that it is controlled, to a degree, and can be fixed.

Id be more than interested to help set up/assist anyone who wanted to run coffee meets in my area (scotland). Its the one element which I feel 'aspies' dont get much opportunity to do.

hiya and yes i think its great,,,as i am single it would be good to go and chat and know that the person has an understanding of what i mean...and swap notes always helps...if in a public place i dont see the harm until all get to know eachother and who gets on with who...i am in bolton near manchester...

As already stated you need to negotiate with the owner of the meeting place if you want to secure a specific space, date, venue etc and to check that they are happy for you to use their premises name and contact details in any advertising.

On top of that you just want to make sure you keep yourself safe and don't arrange to meet or go off with people you basically do not know or have only just met at the cafe or via the internet.

But it sounds like a good idea. You could advertise via internet, local libraries, job centres etc - wherever you think your target population hangs out.

Let us know how it goes if you go ahead with the idea.

shellz thanks for bumping this topic. I only joined this site recently so didn't see it when it was originally posted.

I have been looking for something like this for a while so I'd say yes to the original poster, definitely do it.

Also what site is it?!
