Hi.

If you want to try to apply for DLA it may well be worth obtaining some support with form completion.The NAS have a benefits advice service or you could see if you can find a voluntary organisation in your area.It helps to know what to include in the application otherwise it is likely to be declined.

I will assume you are over 18 and live with your parents.

I will also assume you do not work.

Do you claim Job seekers allowance? If not why not?

Would you be entitled to claim ESA?

Do you get DLA?

If I were you I would go down to the Job center and ask them the same question.

The Job Centre or the Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help you.

If they don't give you all the help you need, you might be able to get some advice from the NAS or Mencap.

You should be able to claim DLA which you already have and ESA if you are working under 16 hours of work or not capable of doing paid work.

When i moved into supported living this is all my benefit claims:

* Housing Benefit-

covers most of the rent which goes straight to the landlord of our house, but we have small contribution to rent.

* Income Support-

Because i am on low income

* Incapacity -

i dont get paid work, but i volunteer. it comes down to whether you would understand your job doing it full time. also if you work under 16 hours you can claim. but if you are not on Incapacity now and have been assessed needing it then you claim ESA but i heard might get sent over to job seekers allowance.

* DLA-

Need middle amount of support in things because of my disabilities and mental health.

* Exempt from Council Tax-

I am applying to be exempt from paying council tax ' discount from council tax on the grounds of severe mental impairment.'

What use benefits for

I mainly use my benefits for these:

* Rent

* Food

* Personal Care

* Cleaning

* Internet

* Client Contribution to Direct Payments

* Mobile Phone

* Debt

* Transport

I use my benefits on these but dont need it alot.

* Clothing

* Presents

* Meal Out

* Savings

* Entertainment

* Youth Club

The government publish a big book to help benefit decision makers.

It is heavy going but is the best way to prepare for a claim as you will end up knowing the system as well as 'they' do.
