jollypig Report post Posted December 16, 2010 Today we went to hear the outcome of my daughters assesment.the DR said if her other issues werent so complex she would diagnose asd straight away, but as she is in a special school already theres no benefit. i argued that although it wouldnt impact on her schooling a diagnosis would enable us to access extra support outside of school. she agreed and will now formally diagnose asd but now im feeling a little guilty that ive added another label to my beautiful daughter . RainbowsButterflies Report post Posted December 16, 2010 A label can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you do with it. It's always better to know what the issues are imho - and that's why we have so many adults seeking diagnosis now.
justine1 Report post Posted December 16, 2010 I think it depends on what the other diagnoses are.I mean someone who gets help for a learning difficulty may not get the same help for their autism so the differentiation needs to be there. When she is older she may only need to use the ASD dx and people can understand that better than if she mentioned all of them. I think if the paed agreed thats what she has then why not add it on? Dont feel guilty.
JsMum Report post Posted December 16, 2010 I understand your daughter is already in a special school but due to her diagnosis of ASD I would still ensure that her ASD Diagnosis is added to her statement of SEN. A statement is there to identify ALL her NEEDS. You have nothing at all to feel guilty about, if you had not of voiced your concerns then she may well of gone without a diagnosis. It will also be essential for her Transition for Adult support. Good luck with adding ASD to her Statement. JsMumx
trekster Report post Posted December 16, 2010 I would think of it as having another piece to the puzzle of your child. Also it can be helpful in some circumstances for example with applying for certain benefits including carers allowance. Also if she wishes to accessing social groups. Saneasever Report post Posted December 16, 2010 (edited) I'm in total agreement with the fact that you have made the right decision. You may be able to get additional support from the Autistic Outreach Team. Please try not to worry. I know it's hard, but it sounds like you're doing your best for your daughter and you shouldn't condemn yourself for that. jollypig Report post Posted December 17, 2010 thanks for all the replies -her special school is based on her medical needs and the asd traits + asessment is mentioned in her statement. school understood her issues even before the diagnosis and as they already have students dealing with the same issues they have been dealing with everything as though she has had asd. its because of this the DR didnt see the point in oficially diagnosing her but the things she struggles with are social situations ,with a dx i can send her to a local youth club that specialises in asd children . cmuir Report post Posted December 17, 2010 Hi Don't feel guilty. The label wouldn't have been given if she didn't have an ASD. My son was dx with AS and of course no parent wants to face the fact that their child has an ASD, but if that's what they have, I personally feel it's imperative that they are labelled since so many services are only accessible with that label.
