Hmmmmmm...

Recommended Posts

Teenager Ryan Cleary, accused of carrying out a hacking attack against the website of the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) has been remanded in police custody while inquiries continue...

Ben Cooper, defending, said: "He has been assisting with police inquiries so far and is keen to continue doing so"... [adding]..."My client is a vulnerable young man and there are certain matters which are being looked into with regards to his vulnerability."

Is it just me, or is anyone else thinking they could hazzard a guess at what those 'certain matters being looked into' might turn out to be? Bung the right 'professional' (hem hem) £500 and I wouldn't be surprised to hear we've got another po' ol' 'couldn't possibly have realised the implications of his actions' Gary McKinnon stylee case on our hands...

Keep 'em peeled, as Sean taylor used to say...:whistle:

I was thinking the same when this was first on the news.

What will be lost in the haze of publicity about this case is how vulnerable government and big organizations are.

One can only assume that when a more sophisticated "HACKER" goes in, they get what they want and don't leave any trace behind.

You must remember that we never know about successful criminals. Not only don't they get caught, but their crimes are never discovered.

I prefer 'innocent until proven guilty'

No, he did do it, Wendy - he's admitted that... I'm speculating about the 'mitigating circumstances'...

You see, I have hopes that one day my son - all autistic people, really - will have the opportunity to find gainful employement. Now that's not very likely if people can be convinced, as was attempted/achieved in G.McK's case and as I suspect may well be attempted here, that even the most high functioning of autistic people are inherently incapable of knowing right from wrong or of being effectively prosecuted and held responsible if they commit an illegal act... I mean, would you want to employ someone under those circumstances?

As I say, lets 'keep 'em peeled' and see what happens, but I hope if my suspicions are right that the majority of parents would want to see justice realistically interpreted rather than seeing their children effectively labelled unemployable by a frankly ridiculous and inappropriate bleeding-heart value judgement that can ultimately only have a negative impact on work opportunities and how autistic people are perceived by the wider community.

I think he's already been found guilty? Or admitted it? Certainly been spoken about in certain terms of what he did, not what he's alleged to have done. We're now on the 'let's excuse the poor lonely stays in his room all the time, doesn't have friends...' phase. Yes, I heard this, and thought exactly the same. I'll be very cross if it becomes GM mark 2. :shame: You do the crime, you're aware it's a crime, you face the consequences. :police:

The fact is maliciousb hackers are well ahead of the authoroities, they have different prioties. So on one level we know that people with asd's have a good nose for apparently inchoherent pattern anaylsis/mathematics and have a heavy leaning to technology and computers and generall geekdom/obssesivness ,we also know that undiagnosed asd'rs over time can develop an anti social personaity disordern due to feeling isolated and seperate from the mainstream. It appears to me that the same old attitudes seem to prevail, even from asd'rs.PROBABILITY......so without going deep into the story we realise that a hacker has got into some special computer system and been caught, how niave and stupid of him not to understand the social rules, how pathetic he must be a retard, perhaps asd?

Before I knew about my asd I remember looking at a picky of Gary Mackkinon and thinking 'god he looks gaunt, stressed and like he'd been up all night'.

It may become a trend(caught computer hackers claiming aspergers)but its not at the momemnt.

That's all we need :(

Ditto. :tearful:

I'd like to see evidence of his diagnosis, know when it was made, by whom, under what circumstances, etc. Why has it only suddenly appeared now? It's just a copy of the GM case.

BOY is that gonna P some people O :lol:

Perhaps we need a statement from the NAS to prevent this kind of thing happening again?

Oh. Yeah. I'd forgotten about that.....:whistle:

Mumble: when - I'd guess yesterday or today, assuming the 'speculation regarding his vulnerability' was as fresh as the lawyer was making it seem...

Gizza job, go on, gizza job... I can do that... go on, gizza job...

Best start charging BD. You could make a fortune. I suggest slightly undercutting the other 'recognised diagnosticians' by an incy bit, getting 'accredited' to the NAS list of specialists, and Bob's your aunt. :) I shall be your agent and manage your bookings, taking a tiny 110% share of your earning. I'll even buy one of those 'label-makers' (oooh, or a sheep-branding iron ) so we can attach the labels we dish out. Sound fair?

Oh. Yeah. I'd forgotten about that.....:whistle:

 I'm just waiting to hear who conducted the dignosis. I really hope it isn't, but strongly suspect it may be, the same supposedly respected practitioner who labelled GM.

(oooh, or a sheep-branding iron )

Just realised that that won't work at all. We'll need to find a way of temporary, reversible and re-usable branding - maybe temporary tattoos, peal and re-seal labels or the like, because the people we would be dx'ing, would, on the whole, want to be able to choose when to use their label as and when they fancy a spot of hacking, shouting at a man who bumps into them in the street, insisting that they get two seats to themselves on the bus...:whistle:

The difference here is that this guy already has a diagnosis. McKinnon was only diagnosed later if I remember rightly.

GM was dx'ed during the trial/defence. As far as I'm aware, this guy's dx, if he had one, wasn't mentioned until his trial. It's been said he's a loner etc. before, but nothing about him having AS. That seems to be a new label. But I'd be very happy to be corrected.

The mootest of moot points, in a way...

The reality is he didn't do what he did because he didn't realise the implications of his actions, he did it because he could, because he thought he could get away with it, because he thought it would be a 'laugh', because he thought it would be 'sticking it to the man', and because he and his mates were in it together... they are exactly the same motivations that everyone else involved had and AS has nothing to do with it whatsoever regardless of when he was diagniosed. Of course I don't 'know' that before anyone jumps in and it is possible that he is so stupid he didn't think about the possible consequences - but that could be true of anyone else involved too, and again would have nothing to do with autism. Just like it didn't with G.M.

Mumble - methinks my tour and the hastily published Jessicca Kingsley tome launched in tandem wit it would sink like a lead wottsname... It would be very hard getting people to pay to come and listen to what they didn't want to hear! TBH I can't even GIVE it away!!:lol:

Oooh, ooh can I join in too?!

I dunno. You'd have to be careful to keep your dx quiet else those coming along to 'be' ASD (of course no one would do that...) would get confuzzled about what behaviour's expected from them. If you were there, we'd have to make it very clear that the only required behaviour is to hand over wads of cash (to the Mumble Charity, of course ).

I've just got the final chapter 'A Sockful of Coppers' to re-edit as the publishers thought it needed toning down a bit.
