How difficult is it to claim employment support allowance.

Recommended Posts

I've heard to the process is quite difficult and without the right support or paperwork you stand no chance of getting it. At the moment I'm trying to get the right help for my son so its easier to put in a claim, he suffers from bipolar ll, ASD and a borderline learning disability but is still on jobseekers allowance because we where given the wrong advice when we initially put in a claim...

Are you on ESA and how hard was it to get?

I am going back through the process, i did it november last year and now im doing it again. I never had a medical assessment before, i was stuck in support group- the worry if you get put in the work related activity group you are expected to attend there group and find work.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk has guides for filling in the forms. the "taking responsibility" report has ideas of the type of difficulties autistics have.

bipolar uk i hear are a good charity for bipolar patients needs. also mind may be able to help.

ive heard it is hard to get into the support group. with jsa you can get a disability component if also on dla.

im still on the old system.

I am an appointee for my son who has aspergers, I also have aspergers

My son has been on ESA for 2 years, He was first put in the working group, we appealed and won, he was put in the support group. He has just has his yearly medical and has benn put in the work one again, we have appealed decision. and waiting, It was the same doctor who did his medical last time

You would think that if the situation is the same then. he would just stay in the support group, but oh no, not with Atos

When my lad leaves college I probably won't bother to try to get any benefits for him; if he goes for JSA they will expect him to go for interviews and try out for jobs suggested by them and this would be too stressful for him, but I don't think he'd be eligible for ESA because he is 'capable' of work, in some ways, in that he is able-bodied. I don't want anyone putting pressure on him to take or go for particular jobs that would mean him having to trapse across the county going for interviews for jobs he won't get. We'll do without the money.

Read up about ESA - there are two groups - Work Related Activity Group (where they think the person can work, but will find it harder than the average person to do so and will need more help than usual) and the support group (where they think it will be very difficult for the person to find a job that is suitable). The Work Related bit just means that they may be asked to attend meetings to get help to prepare for work (though the whole process is so disorganised that they may well not get asked to do anything).

My youngest son who has traits of AS got quite a lot of help from his Job Centre adviser whilst on JSA and did get a job.

My eldest (who has AS) was in the WRAG group and did some work preparation sessions (which were not of any use to him) and has now been put in the Support group.

The top result is the 'taking responsibility' report has both autistic and parental/carers input. 'Practical support' is the section that details needs which

you/your son daughter may have.

The benefitsandwork website could help with what to expect.

hiya, my 27yrs old son has Aspergers diagnosis since 21yrs old. We had been going through it all since he was 2yrs. Due to his behaviour as he got older and went with the crowd and taken cannabis and cocaine of a week end( which I feel aggravated his behaviour) he got his own flat,i helped him get all he needed and luckily he was given work as a window cleaner whereas he was picked up n taken to jobs n dropped off home later, I have had difficulty in keeping up with tax, ins, bills etc...he has recently had a panic attack over stressed about bills( I was sorting them from working tax and DLA) but with drugs influence and him trying to be like all mates got behind with all as he demands the money from me as he is 27yrs old...and it belongs to him. has walked away from work. He now has to go on jsa I assume....he has issues with interviews, wont go on buses, cant handle unfamiliar places, people etc. wont go shopping ..basically wont go anywhere without me or friend...barbers,shops,appointments.....and now DLA has been refused (I have asked for it to be looked at again)..I assume my carers will stop now,and don't know what I am supposed to do..do I go on jsa?..or wait till they review dla?..will my housing benfit,c.tax all be stopped...like my son says does this mean that I am no longer able to take him where ever n be there for him?.has he now not got \Aspergers.......please help with any advice.....I am on a budget but feel if I am to go on jsa I am telling my son go do on your own.....thanks

Whats CAB or Social Services like in your area? Remember your a carer of a drug user so that makes him vulnerable along with his aspergers.

You could apply for ESA for your son, but if he has been refused DLA it may be difficult to get ESA. If you do claim ESA, get help filling in the form.

If you are not currently employed, it may be worth you claiming JSA as then you could still get HB and CTB.

You do need to go to the CAB or other benefits advisory service to get advice as to what it is best to do in your particular circumstances.

Try and get social services involved because they have specialist ASD teams which might be able to point you in the right direstion in regards to benefits and suitable housing if you are having difficulties in those areas.

You could become his financial guardian by becoming his appointee where you get control of his money payed into a separate account, that means you will become responsible for his money and looks better on benefit forms, if he's buying drugs he's not managing his money, ect......
