Objects

Recommended Posts

I love objects, I love more objects in the world than people, they can be so many things, mean so many things, a whole range of feelings, thoughts and stuff can come from or be directed to an object.

And they are important to me, these objects that I like, and the one's I collect, whether they are ordinary sorts of objects like books, or things that "do" something like technology based objects or interesting gadgets, or stuff that just looks cool in some way because it just does.

What's your most treasured object?

What objects do you like?

Why?

What makes them appeal? Or important? Why do they matter?

And are objects better than people?

Anyone got an opinion? :D

I love books! Many books! I can get lost in them. New ones are friends we haven't met yet. Just being around a lot of books relaxes me. I also like over-sized and minature things. I'm not really sure why, but they amuse me. :)

I would have to say the following;

http://www.artistmaterial.co.uk/products/Pentel-Graphic-Gear-1000.html

I have a full set of them but the blue 0.7mm one is my weapon of choice. I follows me around the house thought its home is normally to be seen resting on a drawing pad next to my left hand on my desk.

If I go to meetings I take it with me and it has very calming properties. I like the metalic nature of these pencils more than my other mechanical pencils because they respond to me and take a few minutes to warm up to body temperature unlike plastic which does not have the same quality.

This little object is my interface with the world in many ways it is the thing which I use to express my ideas and so it is very special to me. When things are in full flow it becomes part of me like nothing else I know.

I love objects too. When I was younger, I used to love objects more than people as I didn't have to learn to socialise with them. They were not judgemental.

I collect working model trains (of the real thing, depending on type/era); I love books on my specialised areas of interest. I love my collection of cameras and lenses. I love my collection of CD's/tapes etc. All define who I am. My model trains are based on mainly what I grew up with and "spotted" during the 1970s/1980s. And yes, I have a few favourites. Most are in pristine condition. Same with my books. Most are textbooks/factual type books rather than fiction (though I do possess some fiction).

I am very particular with looking after all of these and I would say I definately have OCD tendencies when looking after them. For example, all my camera lenses are stored in their original boxes. None have a scratch/mark on them. They are very expensive lenses and therefore I ensure I look after them.

I have a vast photo collection. When I look at them, I can remember taking them and the era my life was at that point.

Objects were a way of escape for me and of great comfort. I would hold on them for dear life.

Over the years, I have slowly learnt how to communicate with people (i.e. non-objects). I still have a long way to go. But if I get upset for any reason, I can always look back at my objects as they do me no harm.

Kinda wierd I suppose and typical of not NT

Oh I forgot to add...my mobile phone is one of my favourite objects at present because I can email work/study notes to myself and read them whilst on the move.

Books are high on my list of important objects - although I won't talk about them right now cuz it would take quite a lot of time and I'd bore everyone cuz I can really go on for WAY too long about books :D

darkshine, what kind of objects are you talking about, and how are you using them?

You asking me to list everything? Or tell you what kind of things I mean as an example?

I just have to say that I really really like that... and it comes in 4 sizes - what's a 0.3 and a 0.9 like to use?

0.7 is my favourite (although the couple I own right now aren't as nice as that one you put a link to - I am bookmarking that page for future reference)

That's partly how I feel - especially when I was younger - I guess objects can be reliable and stuff and that's important, cuz they just "are" :)

A 0.3 is really fine and needs hard leads in it or they break. A 0.9 is ok as a don't put down pencil. What I mean by that is as you work with it you can generate a flat on the lead which means it is usefull for sketching as it provides a range of strokes. When I am drawing with normal pencils I am really fussy about putting them down because you loose the relationship with the pencil face and your finger/wrist angle, the 0.9 is thick enough to have that as an element. Not sure that makes any sense but possibly shows how obsessed I am about some things.

I have thought about putting my bicycles on the list, but my newest one is always the object of desire right up to the point of getting the next one, though I do like taking my older bikes out for a spin for old times sake.

Running shoes have a similar emotional tie with me, but they need to be retired too frequently to get really attatched. The one exception are my Inov-8 Tallon 212's which are lightweighy fell running shoes which are like having formula 1 tyres on your feet when out on the moors running, pity the engine isn't up to F1 standards.

I also have OMM running jacket and trousers which are simply brilliant, my go to items of clothing when the weather is really bad, they can handle anything without me getting too hot.

The unusual one would be a spud peeler, I took it from my parents house aged 18 when I left home as it can work left handed and have used it all my life as peeling spuds and carrots was one of the things I liked to do as a kid, we ate a lot of 'blind scouse' growing up.

Just a few more personal objects of desire.

P.S. the girlfriend ain't too bad either!

Thanks - it all makes sense... I like a 2H best - especially in a normal pencil, I like the soft grey colour when the point goes flat, and I like the super thin lines when it's sharpened to a deadly point, cuz they are sharp and clear, precise, but at the same time not too dark. I almost always started with 2H for anything I drew up with using pencils, then I'd use different ones later to finish.

This 2H thing started when I was about 8 or 9 and my granddad gave me a set of 7 pencils with different leads, and it just stood out as my favourite, it wasn't just the lead or the effects or the colour, it's the feeling as it goes along the page.

At one point, I had a pretty decent set of (normal) pencils, and I could tell you what each one was (from 6B to 6H - I didn't have the 3 either side cuz it goes from 9-9 I think) purely by feeling them (and keeping my eyes closed) can you match that for obsession?

All my books are like different shades of my personality. Rather than actually having that "getting to know you" conversation with someone, I'd rather just be able to give them a list of all the books I own and say "There - judge me on that". Hmm, maybe I should try that! Somehow I doubt it would work out too well though! :)

Exactly. And I would throw in all my tapes, CDs and mp3's and let someone judge me from these

I'd have to throw a lot of things down in front of someone for them to understand me - and there'd be so much that it would probably just confuse people :P

Books for me, too. I'd if you walk into my library it's as if you're walking into my brain.

About that mobile robert7111a mentioned: I got a N73 when my digital camera broke, and I likr the photos very much; that it can do phone calls, is just an added bonus ...

I can't get over the buzz I feel just to have someone understand something I say! :) It's so cool! And I love to share my musical tastes with people too. Connecting to another person through a piece of music gives me a massive buzz too. :)

My husband's a hoarder. He has his exercise books from school - not just a sample of them, all of them. If I want to throw something out he can always give a reason not to. He has loads of LPs with no means of playing them. He loves books, too, and second-hand bookshops in particular (as does my eldest). I like reading books, but he also likes books as objects in themselves. He has computer magazines from a decade ago, and clothes he's had since before we were married which he's never worn since. I could go on, but you get the idea
