Hurting himself

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My son is recently hurtinh himself more and more when hes frustrated or upset. He hits himself in the face with both hands at the same time, one on each side of his face. He doesnt leave a mark so should i allow him to continue as he doesnt seem to be doing any damage or is this something we should try and stop now incase it gets worse? He did use to head bang as a baby/toddler but grew out of that, i did have to intervene sometimes as he would head bang the pavement and walls so it was dangerous for him.

I would try and get him out of this self harming habit before it steps up in intensity more and more! Did he 'grow out' of self harming as a baby (head banging)??? He may need professional input (mental health wise) is anyway of distracting him? Or doing calming corner to go when frustrated or upset?! XKLX

Hi Noskcaj86

I can totally relate to this. My son Glen used to hit himself on his head, side of his face and his eye until very recently although he still hits himself occasionally but only lightly, whereas before he was hitting himself with extreme force. Glen has been undergoing a mental health assessment in a specialist autism hospital where he has been doing extremely well.

You must seek professional help, your son could be anxious, like my son was, he could be hitting himself due to a sensory need or communication problems.

When he does hit himself try to distract him, get him to go in a different room, or get something to eat, anything could help. Don't make the mistake of telling him not to hit himself which I did in the past this made the situation much worse, as Glen would then hit himself even more and for longer.

Please keep in touch and tell us how things are going. I do wish you well, please P.M. me anytime :-)

Thankyou both. I have nowhere to turn for professional help at the moment. We dont have any appointments for the next couple of months other than seeing a geneticist, and i doubt they can help with this problem... but i will ask at his appt if they can help. I hate seeing him hit himself. Today he did it with just 1 hand to the back of his head very hard all becuase he was asked to say sorry to his brother. So it can be over quite a small thing.

My Grandson hits himself with both hands sometimes too .... I don't know if I did the right thing even , but I said ''don't do that'' in a jokey voice so now whenever he does it he looks at me to say ''don't do that'' and then he laughs and stops but I don't want to make it into a game as such , but at least it stops him as it upsets me so much to see him do it and I think he knows Nanny doesn't want him to do that so it is nice to see him stop when he laughs about it and I hope he grows out of it too! :D xxx
