Fish oils and insomnia

Recommended Posts

DS has been taking eye-Q fish oils on and off for a year. No problems initially and noticed improvements in concentration and coordination. About 8 mths ago he started waking up at night shouting out or having nightmares, thought it was just a phase (new baby in the house too) but after reading something about evening primrose oil (which is in Eye-Q) causing insomnia stopped the Eye-Q in case that was causing it. Sleep seemed to improve soon after. Restarted fish oils again, ok initially then more nightmares (not every night) and increasingly manic behaviour in the day time like brain sped up a thousand times  Wasn't sure if this was coincidental or linked to Eye-Q, after all isn't it supposed to improve behaviour!! but stopped it again and sleep seemed to return to normal. Behaviour still manic but he seemed to be coming down of whatever high he was on! However also noticed his coordination wasn't as good and at times when not manic he started to struggle to concentrate so well so think he was getting some benefit.

Decided to try a different brand, Eskimo kids which contains rapeseed oil rather than evening primrose oil and started that two days ago. The last two night DS has woken up with bad dreams. Now very confused as to what is going on, whether it is just purely coincidental and nothing to do with the fish oils or what! If related not sure if it is a problem to do with the carrier oil or the omegas themselves. Suppose theoretically if the omegas improve brain activity and functioning they could make it more active at night.

Just wondering if anyone else had had this experience and come across anything similar. Would like to continue with the supplements but not at the expense of a decent nights sleep - baby wakes regularly too so if DS is up am totally knackered the following day!
