Hello

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've recently been diagnosed with aspergers and thought it would be a good idea to talk to other people who are on the spectrum.

I've spent some time reading other peoples posts and its a relief to know that I'm not the only one who has trouble working and socialising with people.

I don't want to ramble on and bore everyone with too much detail so I'll leave it there for now.

Hi there

Nice to hear from you and seems like you're a similar age to me. I'm 36 and have recently been diagnosed with Aspergers.

I have lots of coping mechanisms in place now and am quite comfortable with who I am but its been a difficult process getting there. I still have my meltdowns (but very much more controlled!) and don't like socialising in groups plus work is a daily battle. However, I think I quite entertain people in the office with some of the random stuff that I come out with :-)

Would be good to hear more about you..I don't think you'd bore anyone on here!

Hi Brooke

You're right about my age, I'm 34.

I feel a lot better about myself now I know what is going on. I didn't know much about Aspergers until after I had been diagnosed and then it all made sense. Before then I could be quite hard on myself for getting it wrong in social situations or melting down, I saw it as some sort of failing.

I still have meltdowns but they are not like the ones of old where I would drive like a lunatic and break stuff. The one thing that has helped me a lot is taking up running and joining a running club. If I get stressed now I just pop out for jog and everything seems much better afterwards. The thing that I'm working on now is small talk. I'm ok if I'm talking about something in particular but general chit chat hurts my brain. I am getting better though.

Thanks for replying, it would be nice to hear more about you too

Sounds like you're doing a really good job of managing things. Finding an outlet in running is fab, and in a club there is a common interest there to chat to people about which makes things easier.

I completely know what you mean about chit chat, I can do it for a while but my mind goes blank when the old repetoire of stock phrases and subjects runs out, liike the ones about the weather, holidays, health, blah blah blah...would much rather talk about something useful!

I did read something that conversation is a bit like a tennis rally, to and fro until something interesting happens...thing is a lot of conversations ARE boring and I guess it's a case of accepting it, riding it out and taking it for what it is...one to tell myself during my next hairdresser appointment I think!

Well, hope work isn't too hectic for you in the run up to Christmas. It's only Monday and I would like to hibernate for a week to recover!!
