Recommended Posts

most of the time I live quite an wefficient yet socially insular life, and can hide my behaviours.however due to being clobbered by really nasty flu virus ,everyones suggestioj how to care from myself has met my own brick wall.........eg "rest" change routine! go to bed! don't do this don't do that eat honey and things I am "unable" to eat due to ridged eating patterns,.....soi ontop of feeling phyisically low ,emotionally ive felt quite hopeless.....and self critical as to the way I Am...anyone else feel like this ever??

I am not a rigid as you, meal times and not eating otherwise is a very old informal rule, this rule has saved me from nasty blighters at school trying to feed me a laxative in a half 'MarsBar'!

As I have to control my weight, I am not heavy, quite light really. An alarm is used to signal time to eat.

I have yet another bout of 'Cold', messy annoying. Best practice is deal with the mess, ignore the rest and carry on as normal, well as normal as possible.

Flu? is more serious, not sure if I have ever really had it! If you have it, without anyone to help, its time in bed mostly sleeping/feverish without food and water, until one feels better. If you have it I trust you have support.

I am myself completely useless, a total waste of space and time. You most likely just like me, need something real we can do.

Without something, what are we. People are more defined by the people around them, without that circle there is nothing but inward looking disgust at self.

Normal people say go out and meet people, socialise. !! More than two others and I can melt down, children terrify me, they are absolutely horrid. Older children or young adults can be worse. I rarely leave my house except in the company of someone who is taking me out and will help with my wheelchair.

Different generations, differing ways of seeing the world. I have lived as just plain "odd", no diagnoses in my childhood and to be honest I do not think it would have been helpful.

Not taking 'cold remedies' is really quite sensible, they mostly contain paracetamol, dodgy stuff that, too easy to overdose at lower than the listed amounts. Effects of overdose are pretty nasty. Tolerance to the toxins generated vary a lot with age, general health, and ASD?.

I just cough and blow my nose, the cold will be over soon.

I used to love walking, rain or shine, better in the rain, fewer people. Clears the head. Never timed mine.

People talk of masks or acting, never used one myself. What you see, is the real me, I just come alive if I have something to do, focus.

I'd just take honey & lemon, hot drinks, wrap up warm and wait until it had passed. I'd try to change my routine as little as possible apart from being stuck indoors. I don't take any modern cold 'remedies' - just traditional things for easing coughs and sore throats.

As for finding children horrid, some certainly can be, but usually I get on better with children and animals than I do with NT adults. They're the ones that terrify me!

Big animals that will tear the house apart if they do not get their walk?? Expensive things dogs. Could be worse, could be horses, harder work and much more expensive. Complain not, what has to be done has to be done. If re-home-able a solution? Anyway it's a problem, and they can be very good reasons to do something, what would life be without it's problems?? Dull and empty.

Couldn't you find anyone locally to walk the dogs from time to time? Maybe a local animal-loving older child would do it for a little money?

This is the4 problem, dogs or no dogs due to routines I still have to walk 3 hours a day but this is better than 2 years ago,for prior to that I would have had to cycle 3 hours a day regardless of theweather or how I felt ,perhaps you lot don't get so bound up by routines ...o the number 3!

I understand now. No, I'm not so bound by routines, but all same I don't like to break them. I also have some very odd obsessive compulsive rituals that I can't afford to ignore - so that number 3 thing makes sense too.

The dogs are a prop, people are not surprised by dog walkers. Maybe you feel safer with dogs with you?? Also exercise such as that is sought of addictive! Filling time with a fixed activity. Are you fit? How about using that time doing something useful for others? Gardening is a very good time filler, endless units of 3.

Dogs as props...interesting, for I've been tempted to have a dog for that same reason. There are a lot of dogless walkers where I live in Yorkshire and I'm just a minute away from a path which leads up the moors and I have lots of woods very nearby. I can easily find somewhere quiet with no people, and this is what keeps me over there. I need this psychological attachment to wild places. Here in Lancashire I'm at my parents' old home, and I'm psychologically very attached to it but I can't go for walks in quiet places without having to endure walking through suburbia first and a main road. And there's nothing like the choice of walks here as there is over there, but I do have the seaside. This is a very big thing in my life, clinging onto the past (this house) and being torn between the two places. My routine involves travelling backwards and forwards every couple of weeks (with my cats), a very drastic aspie routine, that I've been doing since 1988.

Yes, I'm very fit, or at least I thought I was until I learnt my iron was low. I can walk many miles in a day. The only trouble is that eat I eat so little. How's your flu? Are you feeling any better?

OH DEAR The whole point of this thread was ato ask how do do people cope with routine changes,i dotnhence illness like the flu becomes even worse and gets me down emotionally due to the condition, out of the comments I now realise I need to sell my dogs to do charity work with the time,am I fit? who knows I walk 10-12 miles a day.,i used to cycle and raqce bikes so was a lot fitter, took a lot of mental courage to give that up,i always hated it, and now there are comments on here aboutnot eaqtig, having survived being 3 1/2 stone and near death I make myself eat and only eat the same things every meal every day,but now due to comments about eating very little I feel triggered, perhaps this is not the place FOR SUPPORT BUT THE PLACE FOPR BEING TRIGGERED

alexontime you puzzle me. Others I have looked at were understandable, maybe I misread your postings. It helps to be clear. Your last post in CAPITALS is better.

When things have gone wrong before when talking to someone, I have said "shall we start again".

Its best not to use "masks" they have a habit of falling away or being seen through.

It wasn't clear in your opening post that coping with routine changes was the main issue. We are only trying to help, and we can only go on what you tell us, and gave no hint that you worked 12 hours a day. It sounds as if you cope far better than I would in those circumstances. You complain of being triggered but how are we to know what your triggers are without telling us?

"on top of feeling phyisically low ,emotionally ive felt quite hopeless.....and self critical as to the way I Am...anyone else feel like this ever??"

Yes, many times in my life.

I can only tell you how I cope with routine changes. It may not apply to you at all. My routines aren't as rigid as yours (which helps) but, even so, changes can have devastating effects, and depending on what it is I can only cope with them by minimising them as far as possible, running away from them, and distracting myself with anything at all - special interests, music, walks, voluntary work, etc.

I don't think you need to re-home your dogs Alex, it sounds like they're an important part in your life. I am not all that bound by routines so I can't be of much help with that but maybe you could rest as much as possible but still follow your routines? I know walking for 3 hours a day must be awful when you're feeling so ill but you also don't want to upset yourself by breaking that routine as unfortunately that may keep you ill for longer. Do cold and flu medicines like Beechams work well for you? Maybe you could take some half an hour before you take your dogs for a walk - hopefully it will make you feel well enough to have your walk and when you get home you can rest.

I hope you feel better soon

Hi alexontime, you say that you used to bike ride for 3 hours but that you managed to break this routine. How did you manage to break it? At least it shows that you are able to change your routines, otherwise you would still be doing that now. If you feel you need to walk every day that is very healthy and only becomes a problem if you are struggling to cope. I guess it's a question of which routines are helpful and good for you and which are a problem for you. If you need to walk and need to include the number 3 perhaps you could walk for 3 miles rather than 3 hours. Three miles would only take about one hour but would still include the number 3 or perhaps you could walk for 33 minutes? See if you can change the routine to work FOR YOU rather than the routine forcing you to work for it. You did it before so you know you can do it again.
