Hello, I'm new here.

Not sure what to say, but I suppose loads of people here are the same, also I'm never really very good replying ... I over think and edit replies before I send them.

I'll try not to do that here, if I make obvious mistakes in what I say, it's not intentional.

I have Aspergers and I want to talk, but I am extremely reluctant for long conversations straight away ...

I'm not dismissing anyone from replying, I just have a strange, annoying quirk of shyness and just want to get used to this first.

So Hello :)

I over think and edit replies a lot, too. Sometimes it feels as though I'm in a kind of whirlwind of over-thinking and editing. I have friends online now, though, and I have found that I do it less. I'll probably always be prone to over thinking, but over time talking online has helped me gain some confidence. If you're talking to others who are on the spectrum, they very likely relate to being overly self-analytical when it comes to communicating with others, and I think knowing that helps, too.

Welcome :)

Yes, that's the main thing what drew me to joining this, meaning people understand because most have it or know about it. Though I'm still a touch dubious, I've never really had a bad experience online, it's more that I panic and try to appear popular to make friends or just conversation ... and I inevitably fail and just disappear, only to make the same mistake on forums a year later.

But now I can just talk and drop the act, I'm really glad I found this, I'm enjoying reading through some of the posts.

Thanks for your reply ;)

No worries, UnusualPatronus, and welcome!

You'll probably notice that I tend to go on a bit especially when discussing my many special interests. You'll also notice that edit my posts a lot - but I'm determined not to edit this one :)

Thanks Mihaela,

I struggle to not edit :) I don't ever change my main point, but I re-write bits differently before I've even finished a paragraph. Sometimes what looks like a quick statement has probably taken an hour.

It's almost like I don't know what I'm saying until I start writing then think, 'well that doesn't make sense!' and delete to change something that probably didn't need changing ... I am guilty of rewording that last sentence too, to be honest I've just gone and over-thought this whole reply. :/

But it's my first day here, so I'll let myself off

Hi Unusual Patronus, welcome to the forum :)

I overthink and edit replies as well. I guess it's a typical aspie thing! I also waffle a lot in my posts which probably irritates other members :P

Your interests sound quite similar to mine. Do you just do 3D modelling for fun or for CG movies or games or what?

My concise posts take a little time to think through, and are only edited during the write, once posted thats it.

Spell checkers help a lot. I am hoping not repeat my mistake of taking things so seriously and getting annoyed and upset. This for my part is my only intelligent conversation I tend to have.

Hi Laddo, no unfortunately I don't do it as a career ... though on a positive note I am getting help now from an employment company Mental health Matters, that is helping me get a tour or even trial/voluntary work with computer games companies, it's not guaranteed that I will get that though. So failing that, they'll help me get into uni to learn everything properly.

I am already a natural modeler and can build accurate models with free software that I shouldn't be able to without paying for fancy tools, which I just don't need.

I love Modeling and it has just been for fun, but my family keep telling me that I should try and make money of it or a career, but because I don't own the software, it's free and not open-source... I can't, I'd be risking being taken to court.

But I know I'll be good at doing it for a job. I'm ranting on now but I've also started doing animation on sketchup, which is quite difficult as it's not an animation program, it's just an architectural program just for building models. It has no tools or ability to make things move, but the aspie in me noticed that if it let's you place a camera view wherever you want to a degree of precision NASA would be proud of, then let's you hide bits of your model when selecting a new view point. There's stop motion animation right there :) I've gone on too much, just had to say that though.

Hello everyone, the introductions are always difficult for me. I'm in my 50's and two years ago after an epic meltdown my GP referred me to a mental health specialist. Ten minutes into the appointment the consultant told me I had Aspergers, it was a relief to finally know what and why after all this time.

Great news! Thanks, WB. It makes life a lot easier for all of us :)

It's obvious that you get upset about things. We all do. Sometimes my words may sound harsh, but I try to be fair. They're nevr intended to hurt. Sometimes we have to question why we do get so upset, whether it's reasonable and whether there's something deeper causing it. I know it's helped me improve a lot by questioning my negative traits. When we confront them, we're more than half-way to eliminating them altogether. They often originate from things that happened in our childhoods which become blown out of all proportion.

@Unusual - On other forums I sometimes used to write long posts on a document page, work on them to get them exactly right - I'm very pedantic, and something of a perfectionist - quite typically Aspie! When I was happy with what I'd written I'd copy and paste into the forum, not needing to edit it. Some forums allow a permanent edit/delete facility for posts, but this one doesn't. Anything posted here stays here, unless edited pretty quickly.

@Pan - welcome! Ten minutes must surely be a record diagnosis! I'm envious :)

Sorry Waterboatman I must have missed your post. I too edit only before posting, @mihaele and I use other editor for long posts, to make sure I don't have any mistakes and @Pari that diagnosis was quick. But good for you, welcome, hope you

get help with anything you may need.

This post is probably the first I haven't edited ... Much!

That's cool, I hope you can get a job out of it! My brother managed to get a job at DICE in 2011-12 from his work with the Half-Life 1 engine and that was released in 1998! Mind you, he did make a lot of changes before he released his game (if you like horror games, I recommend you give it a try - Cry of Fear) but I think that if you are good at modelling you stand a good chance. Good luck! :D

I myself do some level design for the Source engine. It's so fun! I hope to get a job in a games company myself as I am attempting to create a short 'interactive ghost story' game in the near-future.

Oh I was asked to leave first for a minute while they had a consult between themselves, there was a student there at the time which I forgot to mention in my first post. When I was asked to return it was then I was given the diagnosis much to my relief. I won't deny thinking they were going to tell me I was about to be sectioned or something.

Getting used to it is taking time though.

Sorry I included too many quotes when answering, getting used to how the answering setup works is something I'll conquer eventually.
