5 year old son starting school in Aug

Recommended Posts

Hello

I would love to hear from other people whose children are starting school in August. My son is going to a special school for autistic children. We were very very lucky to get him in there as there was a very very high demand!

Mine too B)

My son is five at the end of Sept but has been accepted to a fab special school in Swindon. They specialise in ASD teaching techniques - he'll even get to go horse riding and swimming once a week, they have very small class sizes and 2 on site speech therapists.

They are on the same campus at a mainstream and integrate the kids from mainstream into music lessons, play time and lunch. I think its great because it means the kids in the special school don't just mix with special needs kids, and it gives the mainstream kids a far better appreciation of kids in the special school.

He also gets transport and they play fun but educational games on the bus. I took him for a visit and couldn't drag him away from the relaxation room!

Those facilities sound fantastic, Wish there was something like that where I live, hope your 2 children enjoy the school and get the best start in life from it. My youngest NT starts school in September and I and dreading it, took me 3 weeks to complete the forms, admitting he wasn't little any more was hard.

The school that my son is going to is just down the road from my house. I have been taking him there over the past wee while to run about the playground so that he can get used to things.

I told him that the next step was to be going through the school door. We arranged the visit and i will be perfectly honest, i was dreading it! However, i was gob smacked with my little boy! I explained that we were going through the door - which he accepted (no lying on the floor), Met his teacher, took teacher's hand and then happily went into the classroom. Played with the toys and then went for a tour of the school. The little cherub then asked to go back into the classroom - his teacher was gobsmacked and so was I! No fuss, no nothing - told the teacher that we had been coming down to play around the school when it was closed and he thought this was a fab idea! I strongly recommend it.

Its the scariest thing, isn't it? I was so worried Tyler would react badly when we visited.

I'm just hoping he doesn't cry more than me on the first day.... :crying:

He has to wear a uniform too; and he has just got his new specs so will look very grown up, uh-oh, welling up already.....!!!

My four year old lil matey boy starts school in September, he's going into a small mainstream junior school (only 16 kids in the morning and 9 in the afternoon - ideal). The statement process is currently underway ... they declined him the first time so I had my say .. and hey presto they overturned their decision (girl power :fight: ). His little uniform is all ready and waiting .. just the name tags to sew in (groan). He has attended a speech and language cluster for the past 5 months which has given him a great foundation for "big school" and he's really looking forward to it .. although everyone saying to him "oh are you looking forward to going to school" is making him think "hmm, what are they not telling me?" People make too bigger a deal of it (says me ... the mum who will be standing in a pool of tears at school gate on his first day). I fear for him being at school (and will so even more when he changes school at 7), but I know it's another step to us being a bit more independant of each other. Because he's HF, he can read at the level of an 8 year old ... I hope the school take that into consideration or he will get held back. Gosh, where did all the time go, they grow up so quickly - bless them! Stephanie x

Hi Elaine

My son did exactly the same! - good as gold on his visits no problem.

Makes me very nervous about when the first meltdown will come....

He's doing mornings for the 1st half term starting on 12 Sept

My little boy is going in for a full day on Thursday and then half day on Friday. There are only going to be 5 or 6 in the class so hopefully he will thrive. Been looking at the price of school uniforms ie polo shirts and jumpers em school are wanting 9 each - em I think not. Have gone to Tesco for his school stuff. I was reading a newspaper today and Tesco got the best review for school clothes!

My little boy is going to a special school - all the children are on the spectrum. He will have his teacher and also a nursery nurse. I am hoping that he will come on leaps and bounds. The change in him since his diagnosis - is amazing. At school - hopefully he will be totally understood and they will know where he is coming from!
