I asked for a copy 2 and a half weeks ago and the HT went puce, said in a not very nice voice 'well it won't be today, we are far too busy' and I said...'that's fine next week will do'.... Still haven't got it yet. You've reminded me, I'll ask them again today.

I'm interested in the results of this poll.

This information should be freely available on the LEA websites under the Freedom of Information Act. It's often there but not easily found, it might be hidden within another document.

Someone has mentioned to me that having a Criteria for Statutory Assessment is in itself a blanket policy.

the criteria were up on our LEAs website last time I looked but it was really difficult to get to them - I actually had to go through the freedom of information link and then do a document search for SEN ('SEN criteria' didn't work) and then search through lists of SEN documents

I couldn't find this document on the LEA website either. I wasn't even aware there was such a thing - it wasn't mentioned in the parents guide to statutory assessment or in the LEA information session I went to. I only became aware of it when the LEA ed psych mentioned it in passing. She asked me which category I had used when applying for the statutory assessment under and I said "what?" She said there are different criteria for autism and EBD and showed me her copy.

I got a copy of the criteria from parent partnership when I was preparing our appeal back in January. It angers me that this wasn't freely available, had I known about it I would have approached the statutory assessment request quite differently.

I feel this lack of information is deliberate - parents are not encouraged to give more than the briefest and most general description of their child's difficulties when requesting a statutory assessment. The panel members skim through this evidence, with their list of criteria in front of them, ticking all the boxes which happen to fit. (An LEA official told me this).

No wonder so many parental requests for assessment fail. I was actually told by a SENCO acquaintance who sits on these panels that I might have succeeded in my request first time round had I applied under EBD criteria. WHAT???:wacko:

Nvapid, I didn't vote - I've never asked to see the criteria. I've checked out my LEA's website but I couldn't find the criteria, perhaps I haven't searched hard enough.

BUT your poll will lead me to ask about the criteria when I attend the next multi-professional meeting.

Hi, I didn't look on the LEA website, but I was shown the criteria by the Head Teacher as it had just changed to have a seperate heading for Autism and the parent partnership sent me a copy of it, without me asking for that specific document. I was happy I saw it as I was just doing the CARS assessment with Autistis Advisor and I became aware that DS needed to have a certain minimum score.

HH,

It's usually hidden with other policies. Ours is in the SEN handbook which you can access on their site. Ask PP to find it on the website, it will be interesting to hear what they say.

Hi Nellie, unfortunately PP won't talk to me, ever since he told me that I should be grateful for the banding T got as many parents he know have been trying to get even a statement would be grateful of anything, also after I spoke to my SEN officers gatekeeper it became startling clear that a conversation that I thought was confidential with my PP had been relayed to her and that I was to stop being so pushy (or words to that effect). And since the transport issue came up (since resolved) he hasn't returned any of my calls.

HH = top awkward parent avoid at all costs communication unless absolutely necessary.

.... HH slinking away and back to digging on the website.

HH,

Well well! Another reason for complaint!!! They have a legal duty to provide parents with information on SEN. If you left a message asking for a copy of the criteria and they didn't return your call, you could make a complaint and include his inappropriate remarks for good measure!

I asked and they insited that such a document didn't exist - until I quoted the stuff at the back of the code of practice to them - it then took two weeks and I was sent a draft copy ... I think I had them on the run for a bit ...

Ha, that explains why I couldn't find it on the website !

Do you think the 'draft copy' was just that, drafted to reply to your request ???

I amused myself looking at the inclusion newsletters, the most recent being 2003 !

nvapid same LEA as annies. Had to look long and hard though. Sometimes I ended up back where I started! Smileymab. Once had a friend in Hants has gone off to NZ now. She was always going through the Hants stuff. She was the person who first showed me how the funding for certain statements would change and how schools would be expected to make better use of their money by teaching the sen kids together. It also said how they did not expect this information to be shared with parents or carers. This was obviously guaranteed to wind certain parents up as they had found the info on the website. I think we will find that most LEAs criteria for stat.ass. is probably illegal.

Thank you for making me aware that such a policy existed. I emailed the head of the county Sen dept and she emailed it to me. DS school also didn't have a copy as they are in our neighbouring county, so it has been a great help to them as well, especially as we hope to put in the request for stat ass early next term.

Thanks Mary

LKS - Hmmmmmm interesting. There are three children in M's class who have ASD's, one diagnosed dyslexic, (and i'm guessing one other ASD - Mum not to keen to persue dx). Have got the impression they've lumped the lot together... and a new laptop with interactive white board has gone up in the classroom....

Anyhow! I've been hunting the elusive criteria down...In the end, i asked the PP lady direct (she's none too helpful). She emailed me with a list of six different areas...

There are different sets of criteria for different needs but I think that you may need one or possibly two of the following:

Behaviour, emotional and social difficulties

Learning difficulties

Physical difficulties

Social Communication impairment / autistic spectrum

Specific learning difficulties - dyslexia

Speech language and communication difficulties

Look forward to receiving your request -

Feels that i will need only two books.......

Is this the criterai - is it split up into seperate books? Or is she talking out of her bottom?? :wallbash:

Smiley,

No they are not!!!! The information should be freely available on their website.

The Code of Practice has four broad classiciations of special educational needs.

Communication and interaction

Cognition and learning.

Behaviour, emotional and social development.

Sensory and/or physical needs

Your LEA could have their own interpretation of this.

Feels that i will need only two books
Interesting.

I don't supposed she directed you to where it is on the website.

You could try asking the LEA SEN department, as you are unable to find it on the website.

Keep us posted.

That was exactly my opinion Smiley when I first read it a few weeks ago.

It would be interesting to have the publication, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay ?32.50 for something they can just print off their intranet for less than ?1!!! I wouldn't be happy just getting 1 or 2 booklets, I'd want the whole lot (just in case they have 'hidden' anything - besides, the website doesn't tell you what booklets correspond to what, so how are you supposed to know if you only need 1 booklet or 16!)

What you're looking for can be found here:

http://www.hants.gov.uk/education/departme...ndex.php?pid=16

Free of charge. Look under I.

This information is supposed to be freely available on their website. I KNOW I have a quote somewhere to back this up. Hopefully those inclusion links I have found will provide you with the policies they are using. If not I'll ###### ring them for you and ask for them.

Hmm, that didn't work so resorting to other ways. Found the following which might help (I'm still looking through it):

SEN strategy

Found this:

Hampshire County Council

This is good:

SEN policy

If you scroll to the bottom of the page it states:

4. SEN Action Plan

The SEN Action Plan is available to anyone on request and is maintained on a termly basis.

Whole bunch of links from here

Inclusion policy:

here

...more:

Inclusion policy (2001)

and the review of the same from this year is here!

FOUND THIS!!!

SEN information

The last one is very useful. I hope these help.
