vomiting

Recommended Posts

Hi - been wondering about this for a while. My son has always been a bit vomity for want of a better word! He quite often runs off to the loo, rubbish bag, sink :( , wherever to be sick. It's usually only ever a small amount of sick and it's not always becasue he's greatly upset about anything but I do think it happens more if he's worrying about something (which is most of the time). He does eeem to be able to vomit at will but doesn't make himself sick if you know what I mean?

I seem to remember ages ago reading a post which mentioned cyclical vomiting? I think it was Carole who mentioned it and wondered what this is and how it's connected to AS. Son has been off school unwell past couple of days (as have I :( ) and has been vomiting quite a lot but rather than being really poorly he's just been more 'off colour', prior to this he was really upset at school about being told off for something pretty minor and I'm just wondering if the two things are connected??

Any of you had experiance of this or have any ideas? Thanks - luv Witsend.

Hi Witsend,

I am definatley not qualified to answer your question, as my son has only just had AS diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. I had no prior inkling! :jester:

However the reason I say anything at all is because whilst meeting with the paed consultant he raised this very point. Asking about any history as well as my sons health in this regard currently.

All I can say is that my boy (7) has always been a sicky. Morning, noon and night when he is ill, not so often when he is just off colour, but always he will be sick  .

I just thought it was worth mentioning that the doc thought it a question worth asking................ (one of many).

Regards

Sarah

You say that i am being to wonder if there is a link, my son vomits every week and becomes drained and falls asleep.

We have paid private and had a CT scan and they keep saying theres nothing wrong with him.

This appeared around 9 years old and he his now a small 11.

Does any one else experance this?????????????????????????????????????????

There is no medical reason for it according to the most expentive doctors, but my son is always missing school.

Could it be linked to AS or am i cluching at straws. :fight:

I have this problem with my g/f but slightly different. she has never really been sick (only once or twice in the last 4 years) but has a HUGE fear of vomiting and can't stand the thought of it will not say the word. Is so so so scared of being sick. It is a nightmare, will not go near people incase they have a bug. Drives me mad, totally mad. But she always says she feels sick (has a stomach problem that may cause her to feel sick but doctors are unsure).

Ben often heaves at smells that he finds offensive but I think thats a sensory thing. He is very rarely sick, in fact he vomited for the first time (other than baby sick) when he was 4 years old, he's now 5.

Yes my son Matthew has a diagnosis of Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome and from the posts here it would sound as if there is a link between autism and his vomiting. In fact it's something that I have decided to see Paul Shattock about in the New Year. Now we all know that autism and bowel conditions go hand in hand but I am also begining to believe that the 'gut' as Paul calls it can be affected in other ways - hence the vomiting.

I have one with bowel problems and one that vomits and since becoming a member here I can see that it is quite common.

Can I just say that we had LOADS of tests ran on Matthew until we seen a consultant who daignosed Cyclical Vomiting. Every test came back negative.

So guys watch this space because as Paul and I share the same 'air' space he can not avoid me or will not be able to get rid of me  But I do think that he will listen. He was not inclined to listen to my hubby when he started telling him about the effects that mobile phones could have on people - and now he includes this is his talks :)

My son was very sick as a baby. He,d bring half his feed back, it just used to come back like a burp, no big heaving or anything. At present he can be sick very easily, strong smells, sloppy looking food, food spills and seeing people eat can all make him wretch and vomit.Usually just a small mouthful, he spits it away into a tissue  .............sorry if this is too graphic . I think it,s sensory connected.I was told that if your child does react like this sucking a mint can help. For instance if I managed to get my son to come into the butchers with me sucking a mint would help the nausea and heaving.etc.

Hi all -

anyone with kids who vom regularly should think about looking into food intolerances...

I've written many times (so won't bother here but if anyones interested a search under 'diets' etc will bring up - excuse pun - my own and others experiences) about dairy and Ben, but the two 'biggies', gluten and dairy are well documented. The paed who saw Ben now targets dairy intolerance as a first consideration on new referrals...

hope that's helpful

We also took a course of treatment for candida albicans just before changing diet. I'm sure the whole family had this in our digestive tract. My son used to have white lumps in his vomit. L. casei immunitas, from memory. Anyway it's in Yakult

My son has a history of sickness. Since the age of 6 he has episodes where he will suddenly become ill, the majority of these episodes happen overnight. He rarely vomits stomach contents but produces vast quantities of foul smelling bile.

His reaction to these episodes are extreme, they cause him to be extremely anxious, he stops speaking, is unable to swallow, (even his own saliva) is incontinent and extremely distressed.

We were investigating catatonia as we could find no other explanation, but thanks to Carole we discovered (CVS) Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome. I was amazed when I read the criteria, it fitted exactly. His episodes are always brought on by anxiety, which can be caused by excitement, fear, dread, lack of food, lack of drink, lack of understanding, etc.

At their worst these episodes would be frequent and could last for three weeks. Now he has appropriate care and management they are less frequent and only last a few days.

As CVS is caused by stress, anxiety and excitement I think it may be common in people with ASD. It may be that this stress causes a chemical reaction. It's great to hear that Paul Shattock is investigating this, it's time somebody did.

I urge anyone with a child who is frequently sick to check out CVS to see if there child fits the criteria. There is no cure but better management can make a huge difference.

Thanks for the replies - interesting stuff, the plot thickens. Nellie don't have time to check out the link now but will deff do so later - thanks. The diet aspect of ASD is one I've not really read much about since son was dx, will make this one of my next missions, think I've put it off 'cos it all look a bit complicated  and so far I've not seen it as relevent to my son but who knows I could be wrong it has happened before (I think the last time was 1983 - only joking :lol: )

Thanks again - Luv Witsend.

We are going through a similar problem like this at the moment. My son started vomiting yellow liquid mainly on waking about 4 weeks ago after 8 days a doctor diagnosed gastroenteritis. I was not happy with this so we went back and we were told that he most likely had an infection and he had antibiotics. The vomiting eased and then stopped, but as soon as the anti-biotics were stoped the vomiting yellow liquid came back. They have now put him on another week of antibiotics and will see what happens from then. He is also a very pale colour and sleeping a lot more. In fact we know he is not right as he is so compliant, almost as if he doesn't have the fight in him. He has also described tingling/itching on his skin so we will be back to the doctors Monday but I will bear this in mind.

I am new here so I am not quite sure how old this thread is but I thought I would had my two pence worth my son is nearing 8 from birth he was diagnosed with a reflux could not his milk down at all, at 3 1/2 was diagnosed aspergers I had a great problem for about 2 years of him being able to be sick on cue, mainly when we were out walking and I was not following his routine he would become distressed and be sick in the street.

This then adapted itself to the home envoiroment often without a tantrum, I ignored the home ones as I did not want to play up to the attention of it all I just let him go to the toilet himself and be sick, it was hard I feared he would choke or something but eventually it stopped completely. Often I had spoke his specialist about it and my son Christian had been present unfortunately he started to use the information on how to deal with it and used it against me by at anytime when he was in a tantrum he complained I am going to be sick. It was one of the hardest problems I had to deal with in all his asperger episodes because of the general cleaning up when outside. but thankfully we have had not had to deal with it for about 3 years now.
