phasmid Report post Posted January 3, 2006 The power went off this morning at 5-45. My cpap machine shut down and I woke up unable to breathe (a dramatic way to wake up I can tell you!). Anyway when it came back on an hour later I went back to bed. When we got up we thought it was a bit cold. Tried to relight the heating and.....Nothing! MADE the council send someone out, but the pump has gone to pump heaven (ahh) so we will have to stay cold till tomorrow 'sometime'. Warming vibes needed please! Our boiler once packed up on boxing day we had to borrow a very motley collection of horribly unsafe blow heaters etc. When British gas finally came out they didn't have the right part Hope you get fixed soon. phasmid Report post Posted January 3, 2006 I have sleep apnea. Cpap is a machine to help keep my airway open at night. Continuos Positive Airway Pressure. It pushes air down my nose to open airway and you have to push against it to breathe out (that sounds a lot harder than it is!). In sleep apnea, the patient's airway becomes restricted as their muscles relax naturally during sleep, which causes arousal from sleep. The CPAP machine stops this phenomenon by delivering a constant stream of compressed air via a mask, which splints the airway, allowing the patient to breathe freely. hope this helps, and correct me if i am wrong phasmid i cut and paste this because i knew what it was for but was unable to think of the words myself! my little prem cousin was on cpap as she was born at 24 weeks and sometimes stopped beathing. phasmid can't they offer alternative heating? when our heating was not working we were given some fan heaters, but only because my mum phoned and asked for them. oops phasmid explained in the time it took me to post! Someone once asked if he stops breathing and I said "only when I put a pillow over his head" Sleep deprivation can do strange things to you. I know what it's like to wake up when you stop breathing. phasmid Report post Posted January 3, 2006 That sums it up nicely SD (better than I did!). It isn't too bad heat wise (he types as the weather forecaster mentions snow!!). Thick shirts and jumpers have been the order of the day for us. Hopefully they'll have the pump tomorrow. Daft thing is there is a blooming great trade plumming centre less than a quarter mile from my front door, and I know they will have these pumps in stock as the system was fitted to dozens of houses here a few years ago. Never mind, off to sleep under a nice warm duvet soon. It's a ruddy shock viper! Seriously though if your hubby snorts and splutters with his snoring it ought to be checked out. It took 3 yrs+ to get mine dx'd as there is no blood test for it and it can only be dx'd by a specialist clinic...hang on! That has a familar ring to it!!! lindy-lou Report post Posted January 3, 2006 india is going to be assessed for sleep apnoea,which is why they wont give her anything to make her sleep yet,i cant say ive ever noticed it because shes slept in her own room since 7 weeks old,but when we went on holiday my 2 other girls said she stopped breathing twice in her sleep,which isnt something they would just say,its also been cited as a possible cause for her wakefulness at night but personally i dont think so,my dad and my nephew do have sleep apnoea too but dont need cpap,although im sure my nephew maybe should have it as he frightens me to death when he sleeps at mine and stops breathing for periods of time,so i suppose she may have it,i do wish they would hurry the assessment along though coz im desperate for some decent shuteye!!!
