neda Report post Posted January 17, 2006 SALT saw my son in nursery before xmas, I had to chase them up towards end of last week and have been told they want to carry out a pragmatic profile for my son. Said wanted to speak to me alone regarding issues and would send appointment out to me and they would then discuss everything with me. I would like to know before I go what a pragmatic profile is so I'm prepared. I also asked if they could provide me with some exercises we can do at home to improve some areas of son's speech which can be unclear, she said this would be great if I could carry this out at home as he is reluctant to come out of the classroom for 1-1 with her and when working in a group they can't concentrate on anything specific. This is the first I've heard about it. Already having to chase up the EP looks like I'll be having the same problems with SALT.
Tez Report post Posted January 17, 2006 (edited) Pragmatics is the social use of language. So I'm assuming a pragmatic profile would be looking to see how your child uses language socially such as, Do they know the rules of conversation such as turn taking? Do they adapt their speech to the audience? Do they make eye content? Look at this site for an explanation of pragmatic language HERE Edited January 17, 2006 by Tez
slt101 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 A Pragmatic Profile is a list of questions/observations of your childs pragmatic language skills. Just as Tez said it will involve a discussion with you to discuss how your child uses his language in different social experiences. I use the Hazel Dewart Profile, you can download it from this link. I know it can frustrating trying to get hold of a SLT. I spend the vast majority of the day in schools and then doing home visits. It can be days before I collect my messages from the office as I refuse to have my mobile switched on. I would always respond to calls from parents but it could be 3-4 days before I can get time to do it.
neda Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Thanks for your replies. SLT has now spoken to SEN teacher at nursery and said she will see my boy next week and to solve the problem of him not wanting to leave class with her, the SEN teacher is going to go along as well.
