We've been lucky

Recommended Posts

I've been looking through the forum and find it hard to read as all these people are having such problems. We moved to Hampshire three years ago and have been very lucky here. Within two months of living here my daughters health visitor picked up on my sons behaviour during a her baby clinic and since then everything has just happened so quickly. I wasn't knowledgable regarding autism and it was a shock but the whole thing has just happened so quickly I can't see why other regions can't get it the same. Maybe we have been really lucky, I can only assume we have. My husband works away during the week and we had to choose whether to move with him. I was scared to move from this area as I didn't want to lose the support so we stayed and I think its been the right move and allot less hassle for us all. We were bothered about my sons behaviour and it had been noted at Somerset where we used to live. He had the usual hearing test but then was discharged when it came back ok. As soon as he was referred to the speech therapist he was then referred to the pead. We managed to get a place at a 'KIDS' special needs nursery for him through the speech therapist, absolutely brilliant then the best ever result for him was getting a place on the Thomas Outreach Program. It made all the difference. He now attends mainstream school with a statement and apart from the usual 'other parent' problem is doing really well. I just wish things could be better for others. I don't personally think we would have coped at all if we'd have had to fight for these things, I found the information overwhelming with the diagnosis and ontop of helping your child and daily life the info was allot to take in and the overwhelming feelings you have to cope with aswell.

We have had a few hurdles with statementing etc but also we have had the support to get through these events. I can't say anything has been stress free but the help here has been a god send.

The forum is a brilliant source of information and I just wish I'd found it earlier as that would have help loads to with the statementing and all the little questions you have and can't just pick up a book and find the answers to.

Just out of curiosity does anybody have an idea of the support for ASD in Somerset now? We may have to move there in the future.

JUST KEEP ON GOING, AND DON'T FORGET TO ENJOY IT!

Hi bugbug -

Good to hear of such a positive 'team' in action - I can hear the stampede of anxious parents hurtling toward the south coast!! On the downside, it's another good example of the postcode lottery, and highlights how LITTLE it actually takes if everyone's on the ball...

Can't comment on Zummerzet (no personal knowledge) but would say that your successes in Hampshire will have made things easier, because you'll have solid ideas about the 'what and how' of your sons needs, and only need to answer the 'who' and 'when' parts of the equation...

Whether Hampshire or Somerset, very VERY best for the future...

Hi bugbug,

Your experience shows what could and should be happening. It's really good to hear of something going right - if only this was the norm for all families!

I hope all continues to go well for you and your family, wherever you end up,

it is so lovely to hear of good things going on in other counties. we can all learn about the good and know exactly the kinds of services we should be receiving. all to often we hear the bad. we are in dorset and the services are terrible really. our lea (which is poole) has got to be one of the worst in sen!! the people in pupil, parent and youth services dont even know what the sen register is half the time!!

It is good to hear of people having an easier time than most.

We haven't done too badly either, but it seems that we have noly got to hear about the right places to ask about from other parents, which is what lead to his speech and language group and later his specialist nursery placement. But once we know what to ask for its all gone ok.

My auntie lives in emsworth btw!

Hi Bugbug

We're in remarkably similar situations. We moved back up to Aberdeenshire from Glasgow 18 months ago and they care and help we've had for Logan here has been fantastic. Thus far we haven't had to fight for anything in terms of diagnosis, therapies etc and we have a lot of support.

My hubby also works away during the week - he's in London and at the moment the level of care we get here is the main thing that is stopping me from moving down there beside him.

I think we are lucky - I just wish it were straightforward for everyone.

Lynne
