LizK Report post Posted April 10, 2006 A while back the SENCO who covers DS nursery suggested they did some brain gym exercises with DS and the other children. I also got a copy of the some of the exercises to try at home too. She said they help develop coordination, concentration and processing skills. I think DS's prospective school does brain gym 3 times a week too for children with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ASD. Was googling brain gym at the weekend and came across wildly differing opinions varying from it being the answer to virtually all coordination problems to it being a waste of time and based on kooky science and just the latest gimmick. Have to admit that whilst some of the science stuff made sense (like strenthening the midlien of the brain) other parts seems to be quite dodgy and and left me a bit Wondering what others thought? If you do brain gym exercises with your child do you think it has helped? Lx
Flora Report post Posted April 10, 2006 I think the theory behind Brain Gym is good. Both of the boys did Vision Therapy which is very similar, and it had a very good affect, particularly with William who learned to ride a bike within 4 weeks of doing the exercises. I did take William to a Brain Gym teacher a couple of years ago but wasn't very impressed. You have to find a good therapist and then I believe it can be quite a powerful therapy. darky Report post Posted April 12, 2006 hello there. my daughter does brain gym exercises every morning at school. a lot of people are raving about it. our ot has encouraged us to do these exercises with our 2 asd kids. also we have visiting an asd specialist nurse who also raves about brain gym too. however, i have doubts myself. i ordered a brain gym book and enquired about my daughter having some brain gym therapy. its very expensive indeed. there are clinics up and down the country but the cost is phenominal. also the book i ordered from them was ?17 and its tiny. it is a4 size but only has about 30 pages in total. to me thats a rip off. the other thing "brain gym" offer is courses so others can learn brain gym, like teachers or other therapists, the course again was very very expensive. i know some will shout about its sucesses, but i always ask myself these questions with this kind of thing. if its so brilliant and life changing, why on earth does it cost so much, and why havnt the nhs snapped this up to help our kids? there is a whole minefield of alternative therapies etc and what i have learnt is the ones that cost the most and spout the most sucess, i stay the hell away from!! my opinion only of course!
