'Charley says'

Recommended Posts

National Archive

Do you remember the public information films that used to be shown on tv ?

The series with 'Charley says' won a bbc poll of the nation's favourites, and you can view them all on the National Archives website.

I had a very nostalgic time viewing all the films but the 'charley says' ones I will download to show to my 6 yr old.

Well worth a look just for a trip down memory lane, the 'Joe and Petunia' one made me chuckle and it's just been remade (saw it on tv last night, that's what got me started )

I also liked the one that went

Sir Issac Newton tells us why

An apple falls down from the sky;

And from this fact it's very plain

All other objects do the same.

A brick, a bolt, a bar, a cup,

Invariably fall down not up.

And every common working tool

Is governed by the self-same rule.

If at work you drop a spanner

It travels in a downward manner;

A fifth of accidents or more

Illustrate old Newtons law.

But one thing he forgot to add;

The damage won't be half as bad

If you are wearing special clothes,

Especially on your head and toes.

So best foot forward and take care

About the kind of shoes you wear;

It's better to be sure than dead,

So get a hat and keep your head.

Don't think to go without is brave;

The affects of gravity can be grave.

Now how sad am I remembering all of the words (I think)

Thanks for posting that, fantastic seeing those again esp. Joe and Petunia. My son has watched the Charlie says ones so many times he could be a health and saftey officer and he loves telling us what to do :shame: so we should be just fine now.
