Mumble Report post Posted April 12, 2008 To get past the trouble I was having yesterday with installing new software, I had to move my 'protect' file to my shared files because otherwise the network service didn't have permissions on it. Now I have successfully installed the software () should I leave my 'protect' file there (does it need it there) or can I move it back to its original location? Are there any issues with keeping it where it is?
baddad Report post Posted April 12, 2008 I don't really know, but i'd say yes, as if you move it out of shared files the computer won't have access, and if you grant access to your personal files it will have access to all of them... TBH, I'm really paranoid about any 'shared' files, so i'd be more inclined to move everything else OUT, IYSWIM and only leave the protect folder in shared... Is this an online back up service? if so, and you know it's 100% kosher, ignore the above! If it's a peer to peer file sharing system, tread carefully... Mumble Report post Posted April 12, 2008 TBH, I'm really paranoid about any 'shared' files, so i'd be more inclined to move everything else OUT, IYSWIM and only leave the protect folder in shared... Erm, not sure. I don't have anything else in my shared files other than those sample pictures that come with the 'puter. The protect folder however has lots of stuff in it, none of which I have a clue what it does, what it's related to or where it's from. Can other people access that over the net or not? Is this an online back up service? Nope - installing research software required the installation of some SQL native client whatdoyoucallit - it was installing that that was the problem. As far as I know it has nout to do with the internet at all ... However, an online back up service sounds interesting? Where do I find these and do they have a cost associated with them?
