1. Hiya Just wanted to say that we found our way through. From being a very small boy until approx 2 years ago, every hair cut was upsetting. Our son eventually sat inside with a door open, talc powder around neck, soft towels also around shoulders and just in his underwear so that as soon as hair cut finished he could get straight into a shower. We always used the hair clippers. We took steps that he visited the hair dressers whilst I was in having my hair done, then eventually he sat in chair up to having his hair cut.

He now at 14 walks to a very near by salon, the same one as always, to see the lady who cuts his hair. I am very proud of my son and just wanted to share with you, that yes we all had a dread of hair cut time for years but with lots of practice and patience he got there... Independence for him, however he will still tell me when asked that it hurts a bit but knows it has to be done. He also wants to look ok for a girl he has his eye on. Bless.

  2. Hello to all,

This is such a fab forum.

My name is Donna and I am a mum to 2 kids one is NT and one has ASD aged 14 yrs. My son attends a mainstream comp and as yet he has managed to cope, with lots of work on our part linking very closely with the SEN dept and SENCO. The journey for our son now, is for him to build his independence!!! We have had the most quiet holidays ever as his sibling has been at a camp for most of the holidays so peace for all. She has had time for herself to develop.

I hope you guys have had good times over the holidays and are not too stressed about the return to school. I almost needed sedation when he first went to comp..I am a bit more relaxed now!!

I also volunteer at a parent based support group and this is a branch of The National Autistic Society, Rotherham Branch.

I am hoping to gain info and also pass on our details to anyone who wishes to link with our group. We are all parents with children with AS ASD or Autism. We are based in Rotherham but also attend other nearby groups ie Barnsley and Sheffield.

Our group was at The Rotherham Show on 13th Sept we had great fun...

2 of us completed a 5km fun run/ walk!! On the 12th Sept which raised funds for our group.

In Rotherham on the 28th October a Disability info day is going to be held Fairs Fayre 2 at The Magna.

Please email or call us if we can be of any help if you are local to us...rotherham@nas.org.uk or Mobile no 07554439427.

    Best wishes to all,

    Donna. ;)

    Hi Alexandra

I am a mum of 14yr old son with ASD we use lock laces which are elastic and can be threaded thro and then can be pulled into place with one hand We found them ideal for our son's footy boots and his school shoes. He can just about manage laces but when needed to be quickly changed between classes these have been great. The are aimed at all disabled people and cost approx £9 for 2 sets. He has got usual boy large feet and we found it incresingly difficult to get velcro shoes etc so looked for an alternative.

    Hope this is of help

    Donna.

  4. Hi everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a youth worker and I run youth clubs and activities for young people who are on the spectrum and in mainstream education. I am NT myself. I have a younger brother with AS. I have done this job for 4 years but only part time and we have just got the funding through for me to go full time! (I work for a charity) It's really exciting and I am looking forward to developing more autism-specific youth work. I have joined the forum because I wanted to plug in more to the wider AS and ASC community to help inform my youth work.

What I wanted to know is if any of you know of any autism-specific youth work or youth clubs that happen around the country? I have googled and found a few things but I would like to build up a more accurate picture.

Thank you in advance, and nice to meet you.

    Ruth

    Hello Ruth

My son has attended an autism specific Youth club held in Maltby Rotherham ran by The Rotherham Autism Communication team. Gill Capaldi is its manager.

The age range is youth work age 14 to 25yrs. My son has really enjoyed going and being by himself, ie finally attending something where we are not allowed in... They had issues with funding as always, but hopefully it will soon re start.

If i can help with more details let me know

    Donna

  5. Hello Donna and welcome

I have no idea why they call it a 'fun run'

I did the Great South Run in aid of the NAS and, although it was hard, it gave me a great sense of achievement at the end (along with several blisters :o ) Hope you 'enjoy' it

Do you have an online sponsorship page?

    Nicky >:D<<'>

    Hello Nicky,

cheers for the support No I do not but maybe we should have thought of that ....

I agree not my idea of fun!!
