Hi guys and girls,
As time goes by, my situation at home is dramatically deteriorating.
Both my partner and I have recently lost our jobs (self-employment is not going well either due to the economic climate and living in one of the poorest areas around Wales).
All of our skills and qualifications are in our specialist interest areas (music/digital media/creative industries)... we are running out of our savings (in fact, well into our overdrafts), are not on working tax credit and it seems that there are no jobs out there which I can do at all! So, the only option I have at the moment is going on the DOLE
Now, I understand that if I go on the Dole/JSA etc... when they offer me a job, I have no option but to take it (even if it means working in a supermarket or a cleaning company...). IT'S NOT THAT I WON'T DO THAT! I CAN'T DO THAT!!! The people, smells, noise, light etc...would be way too much for me to handle (I also have a severe skin condition and can't go anywhere near bleach etc) . I'll end up either having a meltdown, becoming really ill, walking out or being fired. If I do that, they will not allow me to go back on benefits (even though I don't particularly want to go anywhere near benefits IF i can help it - in the first place). So, I won't be able to have the necessary resources to sustain any kind of healthy life.
I am currently on a part-time degree course at the moment and will have to give that up if I have to have a part time job even, because there is no way I'll be able to handle the over stimulation of doing these two things at once.
My partner, music and degree are the only things left in my life that keep me (partially)sane.
I do not currently hold a AS diagnosis, but am waiting for my referral appointment to come through. How do I explain to them that I cannot take certain jobs on or that I can't do two things at once? Especially without a diagnosis (or even a degree of understanding of
he syndrome/process etc... on their part).
Anyone out there with any other ideas on what I should do?
Thanks
I'm sorry to pick apart your post but I do so with the best of intentions
The jobs market is highly competitive so really need to take whatever you can get hold of unless you are prepared to launch your own business. you are going to have to deal with the less appealing aspects of a job, as there really is no viable alternative. I have to deal with people and social situations constantly which makes me highly uncomfortable, but I suck it up and do it because if i want my career to advance I have to.
If you need help getting over your fears and anxieties then speak with a therapist, they did wonders for me at difficult times in my life.
If you keep being picky about what jobs you want to do the job center will eventually cut you off.
You need to treat your unemployment as full time job, you can't rely on the Job Center to find you one. they are the most useless bunch of idiots I have seen and you could get more results on your own.
I hope I haven't offended you, but I know what it is like to be told your entire life what you can't do because you have a condition.
-
I've been driving for a year and just said I have no condition that is likely to affect my driving ability, to be honest I can't see how ASD affects driving.
it is a simple manual task with clear cut rules and priorities (for me).
I find it easier to work out peoples intentions in a car than in any social situation,

Don't take antidepressants if you can live without them. I am not talking about mild depression, The only cases I deem acceptable are severe (suicidal) depression oir extreme cases of OCD or Anxiety.
I have taken anti-depressants for about 5 years now, they were prescribed for a severe case of OCD. I feel pretty well recovered now. however coming of the anti-depressants is much more difficult. withdrawal symptoms are very severe.
read this wiki on SSRI withdrawal Syndrome, gives a pretty good idea as to what its like to come of anti-depressants
Doctors shouldn't handing them out like candy
-
Well if you are relying on wiki or any ".gov" websites for your information, then I rest my case...
where is your supporting evidence then?
I have at the very least provided a source for my information, you haven't provided any!
The link I provided contains a summary of unbiased studies attempting to find evidence FOR homeopathy, no evidence could be found
-
Please point me to this evidence.
I don't work in homeopathy so can't comment on their studies
But I do know many of the scientific peer-reviewed studies are funded by Big Pharma
Anyway, this is way off topic so apologies to the original poster
I posted this previously please see the link
several studies have been conducted scientifically which have concluded that homeopathy is no better than a placebo.

Welcome to the boards, pleased you feel good about your aspergers diagnosis. I find mine frustrating at times but generally have accepted my ASD as a part of me.
im also a computer fan, I remember the bbc acorn computer shift + break + break + shift to lad the PC. I was 3 at the time so was speaking in sentences with speech
therapy age 3 at the same time as exploring the world of computers. I had only seen the game loaded once but I could do it a week later from memory.
Sometimes I understand computers more than people, I hope im more of a 50% of each. I love technology but am still trying to work out my experia E phone.
I see my ASD as one of my strengths, I wouldn't want be "cured". I strongly believe that it can be an advantage if focused correctly.

effectively using social networking is a big job.
it take alot of time and dedication to build up the level of content needed to get and keep those visitors.
good place to start might be youtube. if you can commit to 1 video a week in 1 year you'll have 52 vids online
you could back it up with a bit of twitter and facebook.
the best option is to combine the all those mediums to get the most followers.

Welcome aboard! Nice meeting you.

I noticed your comments from another thread. The feature in The Guardian (if true) highlights just how irresponsible these protests are. Some of these people might do severe harm to themselves and clog up A&E departments depriving more needy patients.
Do you seriously believe everything the Government tells you? Most of these "scientific" studies are flawed. Anybody can skew statistics in favour of this and that or discredit this and that.
The Government discredits homeopathy because the traditional health care system and pharmaceutical companies thrive on sick people.
Firstly
to me and many others it highlights just how fraudulent these medications are. the fact that this mass overdose had no effects just shows that these are nothing but sugar pills. I can confidently say that no A&E resources were used or needed.
Secondly
you accuse the government of discrediting homeopathy like some kind of crackpot conspiracy theorist.
do homeopathic therapists not thrive on sick people, or do they get their income via some other method.
several studies have been conducted scientifically which have concluded that homeopathy is no better than a placebo.

in your post you stated
Most of these "scientific" studies are flawed. Anybody can skew statistics in favour of this and that or discredit this and that.
That is why scientists prefer to publish their studies in peer reviewed journals so that skeptics can analyse the scientific method used in the study.
Pro-Homeopathy studies have been flawed in this one area, the results can-not be reproduced and when reviewed by skeptics the scientific method is either flawed or missing entirely.
finally
The Government discredits homeopathy because the traditional health care system and pharmaceutical companies thrive on sick people.
It is all too easy to point a finger at the big faceless corporations and the government. I have seen it too many times now and I know what it means.
"There is overwhelming evidence that disproves my argument, So I'll create a conspiracy theory to stop people believing the truth".

this is affecting everyone at the moment. the problem is if he has been out of work for more than 3 months no-one wants to take a look. It is an incredibly hard out there. the only points I can stress are these.
1. Use the ASD as a weapon (I'm serious). it may mean he has opportunities open to him that the general population wont have
2. Use your contacts, if you know a key contact in any company you need to leverage it
3. really highlight the retail experience and volunteering on the CV
4. He needs to be focused. if he isn't 100% focused on getting a job then all the above points will useless to you.
I remember when I decided to have a career in IT, I was working in supermarket at the time. I was told point blank by a recruitment agency that I should stop having stupid dreams and go back to where I belong.
I started a domestic IT repair service as no-one would employ me, in just 3 months I was employed at a consultancy making £22K.
I did go to where I back to where I belong, in the IT sector!
-
Are you working at the moment?
What do you think of paid employment?
Have you found your ideal career yet?
1. Yes I work full time as Technical Solutions Analyst
2. I especially love the getting paid bit
3. Yes, I work in the a small consultancy which means I get to travel alot and I mainly work alone

Just joined but I am really am quite disturbed to see so much discussion around Homeopathy. I believe very strongly that all homeopathy is fraudulent
This post isn't going to make me popular but I feel I do have moral duty to make
I am very critical of Homeopathy because of the following reasons;
1. Dilution - homeopathic medicines are diluted to point that too little of the active ingredient is left to be effective. this is evidenced by organised overdoses of homeopathic medicines (None of the participants required any medical attention)
http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/29/sceptics-homeopathy-mass-overdose-boots
2. Like cures like theory - the theory behind homeopathy is that a disease can be cured by a substance that causes the same symptoms in healthy people. this theory is 200 years old has been widely discredited by mainstream science.
http://nccam.nih.gov/health/homeopathy
3. Law of minimum dose - this theory states that the more diluted a homeopathic remedy is the more effective it will become. this again is deeply flawed notion and anyone who can understand basic physics knows that the opposite is true
and "law of minimum dose"—the notion that the lower the dose of the medication, the greater its effectiveness. Many homeopathic remedies are so diluted that no molecules of the original substance remain.
http://nccam.nih.gov/health/homeopathy
I dare say I will some homeopathic "expert" try and pick apart my argument. I am deeply upset to see these fraudsters approaching the families of those with AS/ASD.
As you are aware, there is no cure for AS/ASD.
the financial cost may be £40 here and there on bogus treatments, and the homeopathic therapist will just shrug it off as incompatible when it inevitably doesn't work.
-
I do this too.
just last week I started talking to myself in bed. My wife looks over says "who are you talking to?"
I have had times where I can have my mood affected by my own fantasies running away in my head.
-
I am a homeopath just trying to ascertain a consensus for interest in homeopathy for ASD.
Sorry to dealing out hate with my first post, but homeopathy is just sheer quackery. I have frequented skeptics forums on this particular subject.
see the video below of James Randi overdosing on Homeopathic sleeping pills, strangely enough he comes out with no effects
-
Hi Intros thread is locked so I am introducing myself here, as others are doing.
I am 27 year old married man with Aspergers. I work in the IT industry and I am looking for general discussion with other people with AS/ASD or those who deal with it. I am quite high functioning so it is not readily noticed by others and I deal with AS pretty well.
and now that is out the way am going to start diving into the forum

I am in absolute disgust in how you have brought to a Starwars standstill.
Where is your imagination, why are we not arguing over how Alan Titchmarsh would look like with a full amish beard!

Sun Microsystems are the company who make Java.
Java is just a program for running certain content in your web browser. It isn't entirely essential if you aren't visiting sites that have Java content. I am assuming you installed it while visiting a site which used Java, since such a site will prompt you to install it to view it properly.
To make it easier to visualise it is like having a CD player and a CD. You can't play a CD without a CD player, and you can't play Java content without Java player. This goes for Flash player, Shockwave player, etc.
Cookies are small files stored on your computer so that when you return to a site it can read that information. They are used for everything from saving your shopping baskets to tracking your visits to the site.
If your PC is slowing it may be time either uninstall some programs, or reformat. I recently reformated to speed up my home PC. I just saved my files to an external hard-drive and copied them back after reinstalling windows

That sounds familiar, I still have clashes with authority figures now. I think it may be good to try and see it from his perspective. Just because someone has higher authority doesn't automatically make them right! But I digress, he can have quite a full life, I am an IT contractor and although I may have ASD, I enjoy a good social life. I have taken a lot of lessons from my own experiences and I am happy that I have ASD because I do see things differently.
Your son can only learn about life on his own, you just need be supportive when he gets it wrong.
