  1. Well I can tell you all about "acute distress" in HFA's - my eldest AS brother comitted suicide at 37 directly as a result of problems caused by autism. My remaining brother PDD-NOS is drinking himself to death. Two people I've known online, have killed themselves in the last six months. I am about 10 minutes away from Milton Park Hospital that is full of HFA's, many of whom have had psychotic episodes directly as a result of the stress of dealing with autism. This is the reality of HFA for me - I am homeless, living in a burnt out boat with no toilet or running water and getting no support services. Welcome to the world of "mild" autism.

  2. These descriptions seem good. BUT! how do they relate to the degree of disability and distress of the individuals involved? LFA doesn't necessarily equate with constant discomfort and unhappines and believe me HFA doesn't mean I spend my time joyfully polishing my Nobel Medals and writing symphonies. The vast gap between my interlectual and social functioning reminds me constantly of how disabled I am. [This won't however stop me speaking to a room full of PCT minions about the lack of adult services on 8 April, despite the fact I'm already loosing sleep over it.]

  3. The National Autistic Society has "I'm not naughty-I have Autism" T-Shirts for kids [i'd like one for myself but they don't do adults sizes...] But seriously, it's obvious to me when a kid's autistic/adhd etc. and if people are too ignorant to understand, they're not important. I'd prepare a whole range of replies to use when necessary - the more sarcastic the better. But Don't Apologize! You wouldn't need to for a physically disabled child...

  4. Mumble, I'm having housing problems as well at the moment. I have alot of the same issues as you. BUT! I got some excellent advice from a psychiatric nurse - he said get an advocate and a solicitor. This I've done and legal aid is paying for it. On your side is the Disability Discrimination Act and the Community Care Act. You should be given a social worker too. It's too much to do on your own. Look for Independent Advocacy in your area on the net. as a starting point...

  5. The sound of silence echoes thru' my thread... Maybe Try new question: If you houseboat was sinking, the locals are taking pot shots at you and you were wondering if it was worth carrying on; and you needed to find a rural, aspie friendly retreat for you and your dogs [Old caravan say] for a couple of months, without having to get formal with H.A.'s and the like. What would you do?

  6. Does anybody know of enlightened cmht's or other orgs (Charities or Housing Associations )in the East of England, providing accommodation and support in Cambs, Norfolk, Suffolk or Beds?

Please can anyone with specific names of charities or housing Associations please pm rather than post here in line with Forum rules.Thanks.Karen.

  7. For all the many problems I have, I've never wanted a "cure". I'm not sick, I'm just me. I'm a long way from being perfect, but I'm an OK person. I play guitar too. My favourite progress [played barre] Am, G, F and resolving to E. [Often used in flamenco, and Bert Janchs "Angie"]. Best Wishes. Z.

  8. Isn't remarkable how doctors seem completely unable to empathize with us autistics. I'm not sure being in the UK would help matters; adult provision is still generally dire. The only thing I can say is that there is little in your posts that I don't recognize from my own life...

  9. What can I say Jim, except welcome to the club. I would recommend very strongly that you visit a busier forum like www.wrongplanet.net that is almost entirely populated by people with AS and spend sometime talking to people there. Also search for posts on this forum by 'robot' who made a remarkably similar first post a few months ago.

  10. The last sentence of your last post, rang so true. You'd need to have been on the inside of a c.m.h.t. to understand... I'm glad to know you aren't on pure ethanol... Might be worth investigating beta-blockers for anxiety - not addictive like benzodiazapenes. Unfortunately high anxiety is a fact of life in ASD's. Have you had anymore thoughts on going for an assessment?

  11. Hi Rob, I'm new here too today. I was diagnosed by CLASS, I didn't want my Ma to know so I got my favourite uncle to talk to them. There is also a diagnostic service at Milton Park Hospital (Brookdalecare.co.uk). I believe both can be accessed via your GP without cmht involvement. A note of caution, if you do get a dx, dont assume work will be sympathetic and supportive. (I too have been a m.h. worker). It could affect promotion prospects and how your co-workers relate to you. I would discuss it with an appropriately experienced person. Try NAS Helpline 0845 070 4004. Keep in touch & let us know how you get on.
