lisa35 Report post Posted January 11, 2008 Id appreciate any words of wisdom on our current situation Our 12 yr old has "traits" of asd, had all assessment, didnt score enough for dx of definate asd or aspergers, had assessment of ot, saly, clinical pysch, etc, all said something not 100% but not enough, bearing in mind it was paedriatrician who gave final dx and probly met Joe for hour and half at most Any way, that was 18 months ago, recently we ve been considering a 2nd opinion, and this week I contacted a specialist unit in Sheffield, low and behold today, we had meeting at school, and bless the senco she tentaviley asked, have you ebver considered having Joe reassessed, I cant belive he has not got dx of aspergers!!! Nearly fell over, she is a fantastic senco, with lots of experiance, school also referring to educational psychologist, and involving a support worker whos worked with an older child with aspergers Need to speak to gp, see if we can ask for referral to Sheffield or psychologist he saw before also said CAHMSlocally can provide same assesment, Im concerned tho they may 1. be influenced by previous dx 2, go thro all assessment again, took 2 yrs before, and we still end up with no definate dx Im so confused, my son got upset, said he s not special/ different, we should all stop fussing him, but its so evident that he is, we need ways to help him fit in sociially(I dont want to make him conform, but lets be honest life is hell if he s so different) Maybe some of it is age thing, hes 12? and already trying to fit in , just has extra issues?? SENCO said doesnt always agree with labels, but thinks it will help him understand, surely it ll help as gets older, ie univbersity , jobs, if he can explain why? Or will he hate us for putting him thro all this again? Should we usde CAHMS, or insist on specialist unit> Sorry for rambling, any experiance or comments appreciated! Thanks Lisa PS today, had negative comments from one teacher, Joe doidnt have pens (he did , just forgot they were in bag, he would nt join in class-it was a group work thing, then wrote in capitals in Mondays page MUST BRING PEN TO SCHOOL!!!, leaving no room for him to write what he needs to on Monday! Needless to say, a lettre is accompanying him to school on Monday!

Karen A Report post Posted January 11, 2008 Hi lisa.Camhs appear to vary a lot from one area to another regarding the experience and knowledge of professionals in Diagnosing AS.Our family have excellent support and input but I don't think that is always the experience of people on the Forum and so it is difficult to give an opinion without local knowledge of your area. However Ben also does not have a clear AS Diagnosis. When I explored the possibilty of further assessment there appeared to be a system for referal.Where professionals are unable to make a decision regarding diagnosis then the professional may request an assessment at the specialist centre for the region. So if Sheffield is your nearest specialist centre for assessment then asking your GP to request an assessment there may be an option. Sorry that is probably not much help.Karen.
lisa35 Report post Posted January 11, 2008 thanks Karen, That made sense, Id always preceived that if no dx made it was cos of reluctance, not unable! So using cahms not necessarily a bad thing and we still have Sheffield option,we re in Bradford Lisa
