Newbies from Surrey

Recommended Posts

WE LIVE IN SURREY - Hi there, we have a four year old who was diagnosed in June with Aspergers, ADHD and Expressive possibly Receptive Language Disorder. He was attending nursery and we had wanted him to carry on at the school but they could not offer the support he needed (independent school)and politely asked him to leave!! We looked at a number of alternatives (independent schools) but none of them were able to offer the appropriate support for him. As it is the Summer holidays we will have to wait until September to look at the state schools/special need schools. He was offered a place at our local school but it is not suitable at all and we turned the place down. So at present he has no school, for September. We have applied for Statement so not sure if/when he will be assessed. We are prepared to move if needs be so any suggestions for good Surrey schools would be appreciated. Having him home 24/7 is very trying not just for us but for him as well. We find it much harder in the school holidays as there are more children at the parks which seems to make him much more hyper. He loves playing with the other children and is very social (overly) but gets so rough sometimes or perhaps too close and the looks and comments from the other parents is upsetting. The other thing is that he is very tall for his age and is built like a rugby player. His predicted height by the paediatrician is 6"7 - 6"9. At the moment he is 4"8 (last time we measured). We have to be mindful of this when he is playing with other children. Any suggestions of places to visit with would be appreciated. We are taking him on a plane next week which should be interesting!! Are there other children in our area with the same diagnosis??

I really recommend that you get on the email discussion list for NAS Surrey Branch as they often discuss these very issues and have the local knowledge you need.

I'm over the river from Surrey :) and also going on a plane next week and know it's going to be a challenge.

ETA: Two local groups are Three Wings Trust and Me Too & Co. Three Wings are definitely doing summer activities. Not so familiar with Me Too, although I've met Anne-Marie who runs it a few times.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I live in Surrey, but I am an adult with Asperger's, so I can't tell you anything about provision for children.

However, I am a member of the NAS Surrey Branch emailing list, and things often do crop up on there about things like holiday clubs and discussions about local schools. There are a couple of Coffee Morning groups too, that might give you the opportunity to meet other parents in your position.
