My sympathetic little man

Recommended Posts

Hi all just wanted to share this with you.

yesterday Ben wanted an ice lolly but it was tea time so I said no, Ben got a bit verbal and started punching me, as he is only 4 and couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding (when not in meltdown) I could ignore it, he then started kicking me so I pretended to cry to see what his reaction would be  . He started laughing, so my dd said "look you have made mummy cry now," Ben carried on laughing and said to dd "well thats just so embarrasing" the little ###### had us all in tears, of laughter.

Just confirmed he has no empathy.

I can relate to that. Our 5 yo has equally little empathy.

One thing I have noticed is that he will often laugh at completely inappropriate times, Ithink it is because he doesn't know how to react to certain situations. I think this is quite commin.

 Just a word of warning ... You don't wanna be letting that punching and kicking go on for much longer.

Ben may only be 4 now, but he's not getting any smaller or weaker - he's getting bigger and stronger. Before too long, he'll do you genuine physical harm if he thinks it's okay to do that sort of thing, especially if he seems to do it when not especially angry.

So I think you need to start discouraging that sort of behaviour pretty soon. :shame:

Hi James.

Please don't worry, I do try to stop Ben from hitting me and have tried everything to stop him, pretending to cry was another tactic to show him it hurts and is not nice, needless to say it didn't work. When he hits one of his siblings or peers he gets a time out. That sends him into meltdown and I often have to restrain him to stop him hurting me. Believe me when he is in meltdown he hurts if he is left with fists flying and he throws things too, I have the bruises to show for it. It's one of the areas we still have to do a lot of work on. If you have any ideas please feel free to tell me. Did you hit people and what made you stop?

 Hmmm ... wish I could help you there, but I can't, as I don't think I was ever like that as a child.

Good luck though!

James
