rainbow queen Report post Posted January 17, 2006 hi i just read on the internet that if your primary school child has to travel 2 miles to school they should pay you the petrol if you take them yourselfs? is this correct? i dont get anyone taking my son,i take him myself -i recently moved so the school is further away its mainstream ,and my son dont have statement[school action plus].[not dx as at present] just wondered if i was missing out on this ? as i dont know lot of info regarding everything yet. Mother in Need Report post Posted January 17, 2006 The Ace Handbook states on page 104 that the local authority has to provide transport if the child does not live within walking distance to school. If the school is parental choice and there is another suitable school that can meet the child's needs within walking distance, then the LEA do not have to pay the travel costs or provide transport. phasmid Report post Posted January 18, 2006 It is possible to get LEA transport provided without a statement and from within the prescribed distance limits as well. Tez Report post Posted January 18, 2006 It's also possible due to medical, sensory issues or safety issues(no road sense). If a child gets lower or higher rate mobility with their DLA it's well worth trying. It's also worth trying on these grounds if a doctor will back you even without DLA mobility. rainbow queen Report post Posted January 18, 2006 thank you for replys reason is i have moved house away from school that my son is in-it was a council property i was offered so i had no choice to take it,plus i didnt want to live in a certain area, i drive,and i dont want to upset my son by moving school as he started in sept and did attend there nursery,and he is behind enough without adding stress of going to a strange school plus,the cdc recommened he go that school-well first they said he should go special one then said he wasnt too bad but this one he goes to is a good school for sen. im finding it a struggle getting him there but im willing to drive as my younger 3 year old just started nursery there too, i was wondering that im entilted to the miliege payments i read about. it seems i sholud try, i found address of llea can you tell me do i write or e mail /phone whats best to do and do i reqest a form or justy explain things??? you can see im just starting out will all the education side of stuff and dont know alot, any other advice u can give im gratefull should i also ask who the senco person is at school and ask to see them? do i tell them about my son-what probs i have with him? ive myself took lists in to teacher and she disscussed it with data team and school nurse/but i really think they not taking it in as much as they should-he dont have dx of as- Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

We moved 4 miles away but just out of county and I drive him to school every day and bring him home... he has a statement but at the time we were in walking distance so that wasn't an issue.. now it is though as they won't help until they have reviewed Nicks statement.. which is very worrying as they then could re-name his school to one nearer despite that he is settled and has everything in place for him where he is !!!! What gets me is that the LEA say that if he was 15 and doing gcse's then he would get help no problem !!!!! this just is amazing - a true case of disability discrimination....
