Those with AS fret and worry
Those with HFA couldn't care less
My own personal hypothesis
Should have been here for the evening of fretting on Monday when I booked a train ticket online for hubby and he had to collect it from a ticket machine .... had to write down the instructions and go over it so many times I lost count. Eventually found a flash movie of how to collect them ... !!!
Came home on Tuesday night pleased as punch cos he was able to show some young lads how to use the machine!!!

Just don't put a keg of gunpowder under the LEA man's chair - the one next to him will do

Don't you have to sign the IEP to say that you agree with the targets? You can always say that you feel that they need to be more specific.
If you get no joy from the senco then speak to the head about your concerns ( if the meeting doesn't go well make sure you tell the senco that you will do this - so they don't feel you are going behind their back)
After that then it's up to the SEN governor - but hopefully the senco will see that these are objectives rather than targets and that you need the IEP to show the steps that G needs to take to attain the objectives.

Perspectives on AutismThursday 8 November 2007, Chelmsford
A practically focused one-day conference for the children's workforce
The prevalence of Autism continues to rise and it is vital for people working with children and young people to recognise its symptoms and understand how individuals and their families can be supported.
The Faculty of Education is delighted to offer a one-day conference to children's workforce staff in partnership with Sunfield Professional Development Centre and the University's Music Therapy Team. The Faculty has expertise in education, teacher training and learning disability. Across our other faculties there is a valuable pool of knowledge and research activity in Autism and learning disability; most notably in the Music Therapy Team within the faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences but also within the Departments of Psychology and Mental Health & Learning Disability Studies.
Sunfield Professional Development Centre based at Sunfield, is a national UK charity specialising in the care and education of children with severe and complex learning needs. The Faculty of Education is very pleased to be working with Sunfield on this high profile conference.
Benefits for Participants
Whether training or working in the education, health or social services sectors this conference will give participants a general understanding of what help and support is available for children and young people with autism and how they can contribute to this.
In particular by the end of the day participants will have:
* Raised awareness of the psychological aspects of autism
* An understanding of how children's workforce staff can work more effectively with families affected by autism
* An overview of how structured teaching approaches benefit autistic children
* An appreciation of the benefits of music therapy
* Met and shared experiences with others involved in working with children
* Discussed ideas for applying what they have learnt to their current or future experiences in the workplace

Hi T - long time no see - I've been a bit less frequent as well as J has just started secondary school -so glad I popped in and saw this
-
J is a chewer/sniffer - it's got better as time has gone by - he's 11 now and uses dental tooth sticks to satisfy his sensory needs in chewing - that and pen tops - the sniffing remains and we're working on it ...

The only thing I am now doubting is, should I have seenthe signs, and taken him to the doctor.... without really knowing what to say to him, and got him checked out earlier?
Hey - don't beat yourself up ... sounds like you've been kept very busy looking after your lad <'> <'> <'>
Look at all this as a chance to get things sorted for him at his new school ...
ACE have an excellent webpage which talks you through a lot of the basics on SEN

Hi could anyone answer this please apart from the obvious benefits of a statement to the child who has it, do the actual school benefit in any way(financialy) that is. i know this might sound crazy i dont think that my son is statement criteria but his old school were intent on getting him 1 to 1 support at school via a statement we think he just needs minor adjustments made and my son said he often found having someone with him distracting.I know all statemnets are differant but if a child had a statement with 25hrs support how much monetry wise would this be worth. approx Mrs F xIn our area the LEA provide the cost of the LSA and SALT (not without a long long battle for the latter) - the main benefit of the statement is that it is legally binding on the LEA to ensure that all the support written into the statement in part 3 is provided - anything else that is put in Place at Scool Action or School Action Plus can be withdrawn at any time and you would have no comeback for your child ...
