  1. I'm not a regular viewer, nor am I particularly "up" on all the various autistic spectrum disorders (apart from my own, of course), but it looks to me more like he's got cerebral palsy than autism. :unsure: But it could be very realistic for all I know ...

  2. I got another e-mail from the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge yesterday, advertising free tickets to the concert portion of their forthcoming event, "Autism: Art and Music", involving musicians on the autistic spectrum. So I thought I'd see if any of you that live in the London area (where the concert will be held) were interested. ;)

    Just to give you an idea of how much money you'd be saving, the tickets would ordinarily be sold for between 15 and 50. :thumbs:

    The e-mail states a deadline for interested parties to e-mail THEM (at freetickets@arc-conference.com) of September 22nd (i.e. this coming Monday), however the front page of their web site would seem to suggest that that deadline's been extended by a week, to the following Monday, September 29th.

    Anyway, here's the e-mail ...

    Dear James Gordon,

    UNIQUE CONCERT BY MUSICIANS WITH AUTISM IN LONDON'S WEST END, HOSTED BY JOOLS HOLLAND: FREE TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

    The Autism Research Centre, University of Cambridge, is holding a fundraising concert at 6pm on Sunday 5th October 2008 at the Savoy Theatre, London (change to advertised venue).

    The concert is hosted by Jools Holland and all the musicians have autism or Asperger Syndrome. The performers include Jazz musician Derek Paravicini who has classic autism and and has been blind since birth, who will duet with Jools.

    Thanks to the support of HSBC, free tickets to this unique concert are available if you apply now!

    Please email freetickets@arc-conference.com with the following details:

    * Your name

    * Postal address

    * Email address

    * Telephone number

    * How many free tickets you would like (maximum 5 per person)

    Deadline for this offer is 22nd September 2008. In your email please indicate if you do not want to be contacted from time to time about similar charitable, autism-related events.

    With best wishes

    Carrie Allison

    Autism Research Centre

    I would advise anyone interested NOT to book on-line here, as it would appear you'd have to pay the full price via that route.

    I've also added the event to the (rarely-used! :shame:) forum Calendar.

    Also, don't forget the art exhibition/sale portion of the event, which takes place the next day, Monday, October 6th, between 1pm and 5pm, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, in The Mall, also in London. (A small entry fee is payable on the door.)

    More details of the whole event are available on this flyer (a PDF file), produced by the Autism Research Centre ...

    (Mods: Feel free to close [but not delete] this thread any time after September 29th, as free tickets probably won't be available after this date.)

  3. I received this e-mail earlier today from the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge. (I'm on their e-mailing list, as I've volunteered for some of their research projects in recent years.)

    Hope some of you find it useful, and feel free to forward it on yourselves if you can think of anyone who might like to know about it. :)

    You may be interested to hear of the press release about The Transporters DVD.

    http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_librar...eases/5422.aspx

    This announces that the British English version of The Transporters DVD Pack is available again from www.thetransporters.com.

    The Transporters is a fun animation series designed to help children with autism and Asperger syndrome to understand and recognize emotions. It was commissioned by the UK Government and was developed with the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University. Our research (led by Dr Ofer Golan and colleagues) showed that after using the DVD for 4 weeks, most children with autism caught up with other children in their ability to recognize emotions.

    The Transporters are eight loveable animated vehicles with real human faces. The DVD contains 15 episodes with accompanying quizzes, each featuring a different emotion. The Pack comes with a booklet to help you get the most out of The Transporters. 25 will go to further research and development of new techniques to help children with autism and related conditions. There's more detail on the website about how The Transporters works, and you can watch an episode and try some quizzes too. At the moment, the DVD pack is only available online.

    Please feel free to forward this to anyone you think may be interested - they can always sign themselves up to the newsletter at www.thetransporters.com/newsletter.html. The British-English version is in PAL format that plays in many countries listed on the above website. Because of differing television standards, a US/Canadian NTSC version, complete with local accents and vocabulary, will be available in a month or so.

    With thanks,

  4. Blimey - I only popped in to leave a post in the "Resources" forum, and suddenly here's one of the few people I still recognise here, leaving! :blink:

    Well ... thanks for whatever you may have said to me in our earlier days here, when my presence was much more significant! :rolleyes: Well done for providing everyone with such long and honorable service to this forum. You've done great! :thumbs::notworthy: I'm certain you'll be missed.

    Take care, bid, and all the very best for the future. :)

  5. Hi gordie...

    posts can be edited/deleted for a time but then become 'embedded'...

    we've had situations in the past where people for various reasons have gone back and deleted huge chunks of threads, leaving them almost illegible for subsequent readers.

    Obviously if 'sensitive' information is inadvertantly revealed we can delete that, but for the most part we ask members to use their discretion at the time of posting, because heavy editing after a thread has moved on can totally de-rail a topic for others.

    L&P

    BD :D

    Okay - I can understand all that, but I have to correct you on your statement that "posts can be edited/deleted for a time" ... yes - they can be edited, but I can't find a way of deleting them! And no doubt Frangipani couldn't either, hence the existence of this thread in the first place! :blink: And that really ought to be possible, when it comes to your own posts, if only for a limited time, as you say. You mods may be able to, but as peasants can't! :P

  6. Hey - Hi Gordie - nice to see you again - have you been in hibernation?

    Luv Witsend.

    Well ... if you're looking at it that way, you'd have to say I've been in hibernation several times over the 4 years I've been a member here!

    Whenever I'm on-line, I have so many other things to catch up with, whether it's Facebook, the chat site I've used for years, e-mails, or various other sites, meaning some places get rather neglected. And as this forum seems to primarily consist of parents of those with ASDs (though not exclusively, by any means), and as it now has hundreds if not thousands of members that visit regularly, it's dropped down on my list of priorities. It was easier to keep up with when there were fewer members to keep track of, and I knew more of the people that were here. Discussions can get quite "deep" and "heavy" at times as well. So, in recent years, I've just popped in occasionally to get a general idea of what's been happening. :)

  7. Pah - none of you have got anything on me! Look how long I've been around! :P Thing is I've only made 404 posts in that time, which is where you've all got me beat hands down. :notworthy: I'm very in-and-out when it comes to this place! I tend to go many months between visits. :whistle:

  8. I'm way late to this thread (being only a sporadic user of this forum these days), but a search for "Somerset" brought me here. :) Doesn't look like I've missed much! ;)

    Anyway, you can see where I am in my little blurb just to the left ... not that any of you are likely to know who the hell I am, mind. :lol: (I'm important though - I'm member #35! One of the old skool!! :dance:)

  9. :thumbs: Good thinking - I was always daunted by the sheer size of the old "Introductions" thread, and never really knew when someone new had added to it. You would always have to remember where you'd got up to last time you looked at it, and that just put me off checking it, something that's not exactly welcoming if you're a newbie. :shame: Replies from existing members, while being welcoming, just confused matters for me, in amongst the newbie posts. :blink:

  10. Awww ... thanks, bid. :)

    You were darn quick off the mark with that post, weren't you?! :blink:

    Yeah, I had a pretty good birthday this year, thank you. :) And thanks to everyone else too. :notworthy:

    Not having such a great day today though, which is the real reason I've made a rare appearance here. :( Nothing I can actually talk about in public though, I'm afraid. I was just looking around to see what's been said here lately.

  11. :blink: Oooh - I'm good friends with a fantastic family that has a teenage girl who goes to Helen House!

    Thanks for the heads-up on this programme - I didn't know about it! :o Can't believe no-one in the family didn't mention it actually, especially as I was there for the weekend just last weekend! (So I'm assuming this means they won't be featured in it at all. :()

  12. Firstly we have decided to change the name of the forum to "Asperger and ASD UK online forum". The rationale for this is that the correct name is Asperger Syndrome rather than Aspergers syndrome and we would like to make the forum name consistant.

    :huh: Who says the correct name is "Asperger Syndrome"? I've always preferred to call it "Asperger's Syndrome" myself - it just looks better to me. I mean you never see anyone say "Alzheimer" or "Parkinson" or "Tourette", do you? It's always "Alzheimer's" and "Parkinson's" and "Tourette's". So why "Asperger"? If anything, you're introducing inconsistency here, not consistency.

  13. I would quite like to be able to have my profile saying my 'approximate' age without revealing exact date, like for instance to be able to select 1985 as birth year and leave the rest blank, but the forum doesn't seem to be able to allow this.

    Is this a choice that has been made by moderators/admin or is it just an inherent forum blip feature?

    Just... curious, really. If the former, why?

    Just going waaaaaaaaaaay back to the techie aspect of this thread (without reading the rest of the thread), upon trying to enter only my birth year, leaving the rest blank, I get the error:

    "Either complete all the birthdate fields, or leave them all blank - we cannot process partial birthdates"

    ... which suggests it's an aspect of the software for all forums of this format, not just our forum. I'd say it's fixed like this by the people that made the software, and the admins/mods here can't do anything about it.

  14. When i turn of my PC at night we somtimes get a window pop up saying others are loged on and may lose ther work do i wont to continue shutting down. Im on windows xp. do's enyone know whot it means

    I'd go along with what MotherEve has already suggested ...

    AM - do you have different people use the computer? I find that J has often not logged off and so I get this message at the end of the night. :)

    The message you're seeing would only appear under those circumstances. So if you're seeing it with only one user account, then yeah - there is something weird going on. :huh:
