DD 5 Suspected ASD

Recommended Posts

Son 11 Aspergers adhd dyspraxia. He is statemented and at boarding school. DD has been on waiting list for over a year for asd assessment. Two years to go. She is now in Year one. School accept that she has socialisation issue.( but appear to view this as her being bossy!) We are awaiting appt with LEa social comms teacher. She is is quite advanced in reading and maths so they give her extension work. She apparently gets bored easily in class. Her first IEP objective is to be more sensitive to other childrens feelings. They state that this will be achieved by peer pressure. I feel as though I am wasting my breath trying to explain to them..... Any comments. An Iep has been written. Yet to see it. Had PT meeting today. So depressed. My daughter is a lovely child with a fantastic brain. She needs nuturing and all they can talk about is the negative and how it must come from her. They should be proud to have her but instead I came away feeling so depressed. I was told that she must consolidate her numberwork to 100 with add and subtract. Today she told me that there were 4 8s in 32. She is only 5. She understands the concept 1000s and millions. Should I hold her back. My hubbie feels we should ask for her to go to year two classes in some subjects. Im not really sure where she should be at her age. For literacy she had read Oxford Reading tree by age 4.5 and now read small chapters books. She may be advanced for some subjects but is essentially immature

Yes. I feel as though nothing has changed since my son was at this stage. The difference is she is so more subtle. Im sure she is asd. Im off to buy the Martians in the playground book as it may offer some support.

I don't think it is a good idea to ask for DD to be moved up in some subjects.Ben is very intelligent but has some Asperger traits.Although he has an advanced reading age he also struggles socially. He needs help socially and just about copes with his peers. All subjects now require a high degree of interaction and social communication-if DD does have difficulties then to move her into an older group will create too much pressure for her.The key for Ben has been to have appropriate support and differentiation in his class.Eg he has different spellings because this is a strength for him.If you live in Britain then the school should be making provision for gifted and tallented pupils within their year group.Karen

Thanks Karen. Have looked a bit into "gifted" and will post elsewhere about this. Hadnt really thought about that. I dont know if she would qualify but apparently she may already be on the "register". Im going to find out more. Hadnt appreciated that someone could have a SEN dx at the same time as being classified "gifted" - think because I presumed that it had to be across the board and socially she certainly isnt! I think I agree with you about being in a different year group. I think Ill post to see what others experiences have been when Ive found out more.

Hi my son (ASD, 7) gets reading, which he is advanced at, seperate and 121 with another teacher. I've never really thought about him being taught it with a higher year class and school have never suggested it. They are a bit hit and miss with who takes him for his reading, he had no reading the first week of school this school year, then it's has been great up til now as he has had the same lady consistently for this last term and she wrote quite alot of feedback in a reading record book but now I've discovered she went on maternity leave at the end of the week(didn't mention this would happen in the reading record!) before last and last week which was the last in the term here he had no reading at all again. He passed two national levels by the end of P1 and is now in P3 and still working towards the next - I feel their is little effort and they are just waiting til everyone else catches up to him. They did do paired reading with older class as a whole class last year which he really enjoyed though often complained at home that some of the older kids voices weren't clear which is funny cause unless constantly reminded S reads very fast with a lisp and I can't understand him unless reading book at same time. It's only this year he has begun reading into himself and he is devouring books at great speed. It is a strange combination of high and low skills for want of better wording as he does understand what he reads and remembers a lot of it though on the other hand he often goes to the kitchen door instead of out into the hallway to go upstairs for the bathroom when he needs a wee or if I asked him to fetch something from a room he'll go and never return then I'll shout through "whats up" and he'll say "why whats the matter?" and I say"you were getting the whatever" and he'll panic "aaarg I forgot I forgot".

hope you and your DD get more understanding from the school soon.

Lorraine
