How do you get a statement?

My daughter was dx with ASD last month, and she is due to start nursery in September, so how do i go about getting a statement, do i need to apply or should i wait until she starts nursery and will they do it?

Ours did it when he went nursey but if your unsure ask the nursey

Hi.The link to the Code Of Practice on SEN is above.The information regarding children under school age is detailed in section 4:37-4:52.

There are a few options.Which option you decide on may well depend on how much support your child is likely to need in nursery and school.

You could wait and talk to the SENCO once your child starts....but that might be less helpful if you anticipate your child needing support in nursery.

You could talk to the SENCO now and discuss the support your child may need either via a Statement or using the resources within the nusery...again depending on your child's needs.

You could talk to any other professionals that already support your family...[.portage,paediatrician,CDT,health visitor or provision provided by sure start] to see whether they would anticipate a Statement may be needed in the future.They may support you in applying for a Statement if they anticipate one may be needed.

You can write to the LEA and request a Statutary Assessment yourself even if your child is currently under 3 if it is anticipated that your child may have complex needs and will either need support above that usually provided in nursery or your child needs specialist input now [such as portage or specific early intervention programme for very young children].

 

I am sorry to not be more specific.It is difficult to be more specific but the main issue is how much support your child is likely to need in nusery.

The other issue is whether the nursery is a mainstream nursery or has places specifically for children with ASD or SEN.

Also if you anticipate that your child may need Specialist ASD provision when they start school it may be worth thinking about applying for a Statement sooner rather than later.

I know that is rather vague but an awful lot depends on how complex your child's needs are likely to be and the local provision available. Karen.

Hi.I intended to mention that Parent Partnership may be able to provide you with some support and advice.They do work with parents of pre-school children with additional needs in my area...although some are more helpful than others. Karen.

ok thanks for the help, it is a mainstrem nursery she is going to, i would like her to go to a special school but i am just going to see how she goes on in nursery and then see what the teachers will say as to whether she is progressing or not.

Luckily the nursery she is going to i know the staff as my older daughter went there, and they do know my younger 1 has problems but we havent yet told them what her dx is.

I have a meeting with them but it is not until July, so i might pop in and have a talk to them and see if they think she will need a statement, as they should eventually be getting a copy of her assessments and then know all her problems.
