Statutory assessment - what next?

Recommended Posts

Well at the beginning of March I was writing a case statement for tribunal: one month later all my daughter's assessments have now been done - is this a record?

Goodness knows what they will make of her at the end of it all, she has behaved so differently at different times. During the medical assessment she lay on the floor and banged her head and basically shut down, giving the impression of someone with severe learning difficulties, yesterday she was very cooperative with the ed psych and actually talked and laughed and did tests quite happily, demonstrating her intellectual abilities.

Everyone is agreed that she needs a specialist education but the $64000 question is where?? We are trying to turn our minds to this but it's not easy and all the professionals are equally baffled: they keep saying "we've never seen anyone like L before" (clearly they haven't visited this forum!).

If there is somewhere suitable near us within daily travelling distance we have yet to find it, and at the moment L is saying that she doesn't want to go away from home, which is understandable, given her aversion to new experiences.

I am so scared that we will end up with nothing: she will remain stuck at home and I will go slowly nuts. I would be going nuts already if I could not escape to my part time job and the leisure activities I am luckliy able to do. But those things are for me: she is receiving nothing: the OT who is coming once a week to try and build up a relationship with her has made helpful comments like "you can speak if you really try" so my daughter has developed a dislike of her. It's so difficult to get her to trust someone else as it is. She has told my daughter she doesn't need speech therapy as she doesn't have any problems with speaking (the child has only been completely mute for three months!!) Why can't she stick to her own area of expertise?

Either I am arrogant and opinionated, or our local CAMHS is a hotbed of crass stupidity. I can count on the fingers of one hand the professionals we have met who really understand what is going on. There must be more out there somewhere.

Had to get that off my chest - rant over!

Hello Kathryn,

Yes it is a record...

On another note, I'm really sorry that everything has been such a fight for you >:D<<'> ... I don't have any knowledge about specialist placements, but the NAS has information about specialist placements on its Website.

Kathryn, you're doing really well! >:D<<'>

Don't statements like that just drive you mad!!

Have they assessed her understanding of language.? It makes me so cross.

They were saying similar about my son James. His speech is very good. When they did some routine tests for dyslexia though they suddenly realised that he actually had a really limited understanding of vocabulary.

Why hadn't they noticed it before? Because when they talk to him he smiles as if he understands.

I hope your rant helped you feel better hun
