Max's Mum Report post Posted August 20, 2010 How easy and/or time consuming is it to get this done? My son has a statement and is due to start reception in a mainstream school in September. However, due to personal circumstances I am now wanting him to attend a different school which is obviously not in his statement. The LEA have confirmed that there are places available in reception and are sending me out a form so I shall fill that in and return it but I was just wondering whether it will take longer to get him to start because of his statement? I do appreciate that it could take longer as they will need to find an LSA for him. Thanks!

Hi there, You have the right to change the name of the school to a school of similar type, so if there are places, I don't see why there should be any problem with the statement at all. I think regarding the learning assistant, it would depend on how willing the school are to be flexible and pro-active e.g. they could ask current staff to do more hours while they get someone permanent and whether your DS would cope with this - I have even known enthusiastic mainstream schools to re-jig their staff, so the ASD child keeps the same LA and the flexibility is taken up by teaching help in other classes. Difficult given the school holidays, so he might miss at least the first week, but I'd be at the school gates first day, to speak to the Head and see how the land lies/x
Max's Mum Report post Posted August 26, 2010 Thanks so much - we have discussed this at great length and have now decided to make changes elsewhere so that we can send Max back to his current school. It's good to know that we can change the named school though, should we need to. Thanks again
