How to explain to him

Recommended Posts

so after a very long journey I finally hear the clinical psychologist confirm the diagnosis for my 9 year old today.

I see this as a new beginning, putting behind the dragging him to see specialist ( OT. PT speech and language etc etc )

All of which he has done without question.

So how do we explain to him what ASpergers is ?

Id like a book for him and something for the granparents and his cousins also. just to help explain.

I mean Riley is still Riley ... we all know that but I want them to get an idea of how he thinks.

I just ordered" All cats have aspergers" and " can I tell you about aspergers syndrome" from play.com, but would be interested to hear what any of you have read or used to explain it.

Thank you

i think books are useful tools in helping understand and explain when at a lost of what to say to your son it good starting point where questions may then surface .... i think books are good source for all family members help understand what A.S really is and means so less frustration and confusion surrounding ...

My daughter was diagnosed at 9 too. I used the book you are getting - Can I tell you about Asperger Syndrome and found it very helpful for nans and grandads as well as reading and discussing it with my daughter. There are also pages on the web which list the positive traits often associated with AS which we discussed and biographies of a few famous people who have made remarkable achievements and whom many think may have been on the Spectrum. We looked at Darwin because my daughter was interested in his achievements and wrote a Learning Log for school on him.

I felt it was really important to show her that although her mind may think differently than the majority of people, it doesn't mean that's wrong and in some ways it is better than my way of thinking and important that our world has people who can think 'outside the box' and challenge preconceived thought processes. I wanted to give some balance to her diagnosis and also show her she's not alone and is part of a community of people who think similarly to her.

Here's a couple of links for the positive traits but there are plenty more out there.

Hope it goes well with your boy. My daughter has been much more relaxed and happy with herself since the diagnosis and I really hope your experience is the same.
