Hi matzoball -

Please don't interpret these questions as a 'personal dig' because they're not, but how the media presents disabled people is, if you look through my back-catalogue of posts, something I do take a strong interest in, particularly with regard to autism/AS...

You've posted several times now, I think, regarding things like radio interviews, newspaper articles and, if I remember a tv interview at some point, and I wondered how these things come about, particularly as you've only been fairly recently diagnosed? Is this something you've actually set out to achieve, or is it a by-product of working for special-listerne, and if so is that accidental or have they been actively promting/supporting you in approaching the media?

Again, I trust you will accept there's no personal motive in asking these questions and I do hope your radio interview goes well, but any insight into how these events came about would be really appreciated (and I would add that it's in no way because I want to promote my son or anyone else!). Additionally, are there any further plans - i.e. for you to give talks on autism etc, and if so is this independent of special listerne or is this something they promote or even part of the training you receive from them?

I stood on the plinth to raise autism awareness and raise money for the NAS - that(at the time) was a one time thing to me. However the NAS thought I did so well that they asked me to do more media stuff. Then when I started training at Specialisterne I was approached because I had done media stuff before, and also because I was able to handle the stress of the interviews and photoshoots(not the only one but one of). This is in no way part of training at Specialisterne, I enjoy raising autism awareness so was happy to do it as it's something I have become passionate about.I am not being exploited in any way - in fact they are very attentive and make sure that I get to vet any media I am going to be portrayed in.

I will be participating in a media piece about Prospects next week - they have been awarded funding so are highlighting the work they do to show that what they do does work.

   Sorry, couldn't help laughing at that. Prospects refuse to help me until I am unemployed. They won't help me as I finsih my course and begin to look for work to aim for a seamless transition between uni and work which would reduce stress and associated issues greatly. I have to fail to find work and struggle with being unemployed before they step in. Very disappointed because surely anyone that works with people with Autism would realise that a proactive rather than reactive response is needed. :shame:

I think all services/support/provision is like that. Crisis management. They aren't proactive and don't support the person UNTIL they fail, fall down, fall apart etc. Then they step in (occasionally), and try to put together the pieces. And this approach is not just towards those with ASD. It is the same approach everywhere, with everyone and every system.

They aren't looking for you to fail Mumble - it makes sense to me to have the seamless transition from uni that you want, it's logical for want of a better word. But they have their hands tied insofar that technically someone has to be in receipt of jsa or incapacity benefit for them to be able to have that someone registered as a client.

From my experience with the glasgow prospects I know that your situation is something they would definitely want to help with, but because of the restraints put on them, they can't.

it needs to change that's for sure.

Hi matzoball - thank you for answering. I wasn't concerned that special listerne might be 'exploiting' you, but when you say 'Then when I started training at Specialisterne I was approached because I had done media stuff before' do you mean you were approached by specialisterne to do media stuff related to them? And is the 'they' you refer to when you say 'they are very attentive and make sure that I get to vet any media I am going to be portayed in' specialisterne? I'm a bit confused about your media work for prospects, too, and how prospects relates to you, or did you find your job with specialisterne through prospects?

thanks again

I will relate to you how it pretty much goes for media coverage for specialisterne

to whole team -

"so and so is doing a piece on autism and the workplace - who would like to be involved"

"silence"

so they ask me if i am happy doing it.

i had media experience (interviews, photos) because of doing the plinth stuff, so i knew what to expect from subsequent experiences. to me(imo)it was logical to approach the person most able to handle that kind of issue.

the other guys on the my team don't feel comfortable doing that kind of thing, so over time it has just become me who does the press stuff now. nothing machiavellian (spelling?) about it, it's just the way it has worked out.

'they' are the management staff(so yes specialisterne) - i got involved with prospects through the nas, as I got an access to work grant to have Billy be my case worker to try and get my old work to make reasonable adjustments as everyone on here knows didn't work. Billy told me (and all his clients) about Specialisternes open days, I attended the open day, applied for a place and successfully got it.

Matzoball, I think what you are doing is great, It's helping you and also helping others by raising autism awareness.
