help

Recommended Posts

Hi i have just this site, i have concernes about my 8 yr old son, and would like some help.

From an early age he has seemed differnt to other children.

I always but it down to it just being the way he was.

But as he is getting older i feel he may have AS, i have done some research and spoken to someone from a local group, and after describing my son to her she suggested this may be the resoans for his behaviour.

He is finding school difficult at the moment as he finds it hard to interact with other children, they call him a freak.

Please could anyone advise what i should do next as i am feed up with people telling me it is his immaturaty.

Hi Kim welcome to the forum.Eight was the age when my son started to look very different to his peers. He seemed to hang onto the terrible two,s and still have tantrums and demand unrealistic requests. My sons DX came about through the statementing process at school he was referred to CAMHS for depression and they looked at ASD/AS. There are many people on the forum who will have lots of advice as to what your next move should be.You could see your GP, mention your concern to school and request the ED physch see him. I found reading lots of books on the subject from the library gave me a clearer picture as to what my true concerns were and wether they were ASD. Good luck.

Who have you asked about your concerns so far? Have you asked the school? Have you spoken to your GP? If not then I would approach both and see how they recieve your concerns. It may be worth writing down why you are concerned especially when you visit your GP. If you have read up on AS then write down any traits that you feel that your son may have - without going in and saying hey I have just diagnosed my own son. For some reason they do not appear to like this method, although for many it is needed as they are clueless.

Ask your GP to send you to see someone in your area who is an ASD specialist. It is no good going to see a bog standard Consultant or Pead as they will have no specialist knowledge. Do not be fobbed off. If you have approached a local group then maybe they will help you. I assist parents even without a dx.

Have the school got an autism outreach team who could come and observe your son and then maybe do a question and answer session with you? Most areas should now but not all are worthy of their titles. Again list the traits that you feel you can see.

Another really good idea would be to post here the reasons why you feel your son may have AS. We none of us can diagnose but we can at least share our knowledge with you. Also if you read some of the threads here they may also shine a light for you.

Hope this helps

Carole
