School wants me to sign disclaimer

I guess your son has some sort of IEP...and is on the SEN register?...was it never suggested that you look at autism specific schools when your son was dx.Were his educational needs ever assessed.

Im looking in to how I would be able to mix 2 schools with pick ups etc as I really dont think it's right for him. I'm also scared to move him until I know where is better. I have a parent group this Wednesday where I'll ask others opinions on the local schools. I've never heard anyone say positive things about the school for special needs, they keep saying they have many autistic children & that they have children with more needs than him etc but I had to explain sensory issues & autistic children finding the whole whispering & loud voice thing difficult to grasp to the senco. I told her I would bring his chart in that we use in different situations to teach him which voice to use. She was surprised by it all. I just don't have any confidence in them but I'm frightened to make a wrong decision too. The whole better the devil you know is ringing in my ears as I've never experienced anything different.

After his dx the dr said they should get the autistic advisory team in, after a few months we asked if he was on the sen reg & asked about iep etc. They were very defensive and said they were waiting on the autistic team to come in but I later discovered they rang them that day. They then said he couldn't go on the register until they'd been in & an iep would only be written when they advised etc. I was told they could have done all this as soon as he'd been diagnosed. The senco told me to look at a local school for autistic children but he would need a statement & if you mention the ed psyc they freak. Apparently I have to wait 6 weeks to see how he copes without any help etc then they'll decide what he needs. It seems to be there way as I've watched them stand back while things go really wrong before. I don't want to be one of those situations but it feels like you're always pushing & I hate that. He's had continuous speech therapy from hospital since his diagnosis & he's improved but I have to translate all the time so how they cope at school I have no idea. When I asked about speech therapy starting in school they said the speech therapist had said he'll come across her radar at some point. Im looking at paying privately if it doesn't start soon.

He would definitely need a statement to access any of the special needs schools. As someone, possibly Kathryn, said earlier, you don't have to wait for school to start that process - you can request one as a parent. In terms of two picks ups, again, if he has a statement the likelihood is he would be entitled to transport through the LEA.

I,mnot sure what the best way forward is for you guys, my son struggled at mainstream primary school............alot........even with a statement of about 25 hrs..and specialist teacher s brought in for literacy/maths.He only started to achieve at high school where he went to an autism specific resource at a mainstream high school. Here they had specialist staff who were exceptional and helped him more than I can say.The hard facts are ....your just at the begining of a long hard slog....getting a statement isn,t easy but if your son needs one they are worth the fight to get the correct provision. It maybe a waiting game for these next 6 wks to see how things pan out..push your GP for access to SALT....check for dyspraxia , log any worries you have and keep in close contact with the senco.Iam very surprised there is no IEP..he could have had one at nursery ...and should have had one.He should also be already on the SEN register...........keep us posted, we,re here to help. All the best suzex

Everyone in Scotland gets an ID tag, but not the electronic kind. I think that's what CMuir meant? Every hospital I've been in in Scotland anyway patients have worn ID bands.

Yes, sorry. I misread the post (just had an eye op and vision is quite poor! Quite right - ID are standard, but not electronic ones.
