Son left his uni course

Recommended Posts

My 18 year old went into uni on 18/11 and told them he couldn't cope with the course anymore. He was really stressed about 1600 word essays as he's never done that sort of thing and it was making him ill. Anyway he has now been presented with a bill for £1200 for his course fees, he had applied for help with tuition fees and had been awarded the maximum but because he left then he has to pay for his first term. What wasn't explained to him was that if he had stayed until the 2nd December he wouldn't have had to pay.

Whilst not wanting something for nothing how is he supposed to pay this? Uni says 3 cheques for installments over 6 months but he has no job and no income? Has anyone any advice? Hes changed one lot of worry and stress for another!

Hi

Out of interest, if the Uni were made aware that you're son was becoming so stressed, was any support sought and then offered? Starting Uni can be a huge change as can undertaking anything new, and so perhaps with a bit of support he could have given it a go for e.g. a term before reviewing things. With regards to the fees, it might be worth contacting the Uni's student support service or equivalent and see if they can offer any advice on this.

Best wishes.

Caroline.

I don't know if it is too late to do this. But what if he doesn't 'leave' the course now. But is signed off sick by the GP for stress and Anxiety until the time he can leave without having to refund anything.

It is such a shame that this happened. Was he assessed for the support he would need, and was it provided?

Have you also spoken with the National Autistic Society, and/or IPSEA about this and whether there are any other options. Who was the person that you had contact with at the University before he started who was responsible for organising his support? Have you spoken with them?

So sorry to hear this. University is a challenging environment, especially in the first term . Is there a chance that, given time to rest and regroup, he might be ready to resume, or try another course? One of my daughter's friends has been allowed to defer until next year and start again as she wasn't happy with her chosen degree.I agree with both suggestions made above. Student welfare and disability support should be made aware of your son's predicament- there may be something they can do. Did the uni know in the beginning that he might need additional support?

Hope you and he can find a solution to this worrying situation.
